SICK LEAVE
Full-Time Staff
Full-time, 12–month staff employees are eligible for twelve (12) paid sick days per year, available to be used on on January 1 annually. Full-time staff who work less than 12 full months of the year are credited with one (1) paid sick day for each full month you are expected to work for the year. For example, full-time, 11-month employees receive eleven (11) sick days per year.
For full-time employees, unused sick leave may be carried over from year to year.
During the year of hire, staff employees are credited with one (1) sick day per month for each full month of the year you are expected to work.
Full-time, non-exempt employees may record sick time in 15-minute increments.
Full-time, exempt employees may record sick in either full or half day increments.
Part-Time Staff
Part-time staff employees receive twenty (20) hours of sick leave per year.
Part-time, non-exempt employees may record sick time in 15-minute increments.
For part-time employees, unused sick leave may not be carried over from year to year.
Faculty
Full-time faculty members accrue 30 days of sick leave after the completion of each full year of service for a maximum of 90 days of sick leave. Part-time faculty members are not eligible for sick leave.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
It is University policy to compensate all full-time and part-time faculty and staff who are regularly scheduled to work at least 1,000 hours per year for time lost from work for up to five days while arranging for or attending the funeral of a member of their immediate family, defined as: spouse, parent, child, stepchild, stepparent, legal guardian, sister or brother. In the event of the death of your grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, or father-in-law, you are entitled to up to two workdays in order to make arrangements for, and to attend the funeral of, or to observe other religious tradition. In the event of the death of your or your spouse’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law, faculty/staff members may take one workday with pay in order to make arrangements for, and to attend the funeral of, or to observe other religious tradition. In the event of the death of other family members or close friends, faculty/staff may use one of the emergency days under the sick leave policy to attend the funeral or memorial service in each case.
PARENTAL LEAVE
A University-sponsored program that allows full-time faculty and staff a period of paid time off following the birth or adoption of a child. JURY DUTY
If you are summoned for jury duty, the University encourages your participation. As soon as you receive any summons, present a copy to your department head. You will continue to receive your regular pay for any regularly scheduled work hours during which you serve as a juror. You do not need to provide your jury duty pay stipend, but you will need to provde to your supervisor or department chair the summons and acknowledgement that you attended. FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT (FMLA)
Villanova University respects the personal obligations and unforeseen events in the lives of our faculty and staff, and will grant an unpaid leave of absence to eligible faculty and staff as set forth in the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA or Act). FMLA leave runs concurrently with sick leave, short-term disability, workers compensation and parental/adoption leave. Faculty and staff who are eligible for FMLA leave are those who have worked for the University at least 12 months and for at least 1,250 hours during the 12 month period immediately preceding the start date of the requested leave. In accordance with FMLA, eligible faculty and staff may take up to 12 weeks of paid, unpaid or a combination of paid and unpaid leaves during any 12-month periodfor specific circumstances.
MILITARY LEAVE
Military Leave is available for faculty/staff members whose service is required in any of the Armed Services including Reserve units; the National Guard; the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service; or any other category of service designated by the President of the United States in time of war or emergency. For purposes of this policy, “service” includes active duty, duty for training, inactive duty for training, full-time National Guard duty, and absence to take an examination to determine fitness for any of the foregoing types of duty.
All full-time and part-time faculty/staff members who have completed one day of regular employment with the University immediately preceding the effective date of a requested military leave, and who have been ordered to report to active duty on a specific date, are eligible for military leave.
SHORT TERM DISABILITY
For those illnessess or injuries that necessitates an absence from work for more than 10 up to a total of 180 days, Short Term Disability is available. Full-time faculty/staff are eligible for this benefit on the first of the month following the date of hire or the change from part-time to full-time status. Learn more and view our full policy here
LONG TERM DISABILITY
Long-Term Disability is an insurance program provided by Lincoln Financial Group, the University’s disability administrator, to provide 60% of regular salary when a personal illness or injury requires continued consecutive absence from work in excess of 180 calendar days, for a maximum benefit amount of $11,500 per month. This benefit is available after a faculty/staff member is unable to work, and absent from work, for more than one hundred eighty (180) continued consecutive days. UNPAID PERSONAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Full-time and part-time faculty and staff members may request an unpaid leave of absence for personal, health or family-related reasons, if benefits are not available under the University’s FMLA, sick leave, short term or long term disability plans.
WORKERS' COMPENSATION
In accordance with the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act, the University provides wage loss and medical benefits to faculty/staff members who cannot work, or need medical care because of a work-related injury. Learn more about injury reporting with this training.
