Dr. Sherry Burrell joins Villanova Nursing faculty

Sherry A. Burrell ’15 PhD, RN, CNE, ACNS-BC joined the College of Nursing faculty as assistant professor in fall of 2015.  Dr. Burrell brings over 15 years of clinical nursing experience in adult oncology, surgery, neurology and trauma. She has been a clinical instructor at Rutgers University since 2004, and an assistant clinical professor there since 2014. Dr. Burrell has also worked as an oncology research nurse/consultant for Inspira Health System since 2012.

In 2015 Dr. Burrell received the Distinguished Dissertation Award from the College of Nursing for her doctoral research “State of Science: Symptoms and Quality of Life in Individuals Undergoing Surgery for Pancreatic Cancer.” In order to conduct this research Dr. Burrell received a grant from the American Cancer Society, and has since presented this research, among other topics, at numerous research symposia both locally and nationally.

As a nurse researcher, Dr. Burrell hopes to “make meaningful contributions towards the advancement of nursing science through establishing an independent program of research centered upon improving the quality of life in oncology patients and their caregiver through improving nursing care.”

Dr. Burrell teaches Nursing Care of Adults and Older Adults with Complex Health Problems, along with clinical practica. As a new faculty member at Villanova’s College of Nursing, Dr. Burrell “aspires to become a productive nurse educator who engages in the full-scope of scholarship in academia and makes significant contributions toward educating our undergraduate and graduate nursing students.”

Dr. Burrell earned her PhD from Villanova University, MSN from Widener University, and BSN from Thomas Jefferson University.
