The Fitzpatrick College of Nursing’s podcast, Inspiring Careers in Nursing, announces its second episode in partnership with Villanova’s award-winning WXV&U Health. Maryalice Morro, BSN ’83, DNP ’19, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, interviews Board of Consultors member Nicole Guerin, BSN ’88, JD, RN, Global Head of Accident & Health Reinsurance Claims for AXIS Capital. The podcast debuted during National Nurses Month in May.

Guerin’s career trajectory, which spans more than 25 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance in addition to over 10 years in critical care, illustrates a nontraditional approach to the nursing profession. Successfully executing roles with progressive responsibilities in claims management, managed care contracting, reinsurance treaty negotiation and drafting, commutation negotiations and alternative dispute resolution management, she has managed teams across the United States and Canada and in various locations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe.

As the only nurse attorney in an insurance company early in her career, Guerin took a position negotiating contracts as part of its growing managed care team.

“I really got a good insight into how health care works and who does what and how much they get paid and where the pain points were,” said Guerin, explaining that she gained experience in areas she never expected to be involved in as a nurse. She says she has continued to draw on this exposure as she transitioned and grew in various legal roles throughout her career.

Her recommendation for nurses on their career journeys?

“Keep your eyes and ears open,” Guerin says. “Be flexible. Embrace the opportunities that you have.

“Learn as much as you can wherever you go, because it will always benefit you to have that baseline knowledge. … The information could be very valuable to you in the long term.”
