Doctoral Student Writers' Cafe

An interdisciplinary forum for learning effective academic writing

Doctoral students working on dissertations, seminar papers, publications, and proposals are invited to join VIRS for our workshop series, the Writers’ Café: an interdisciplinary forum for learning techniques of effective academic writing. Each session will begin with close readings of sample academic texts with the goal of dissecting how to write academic genres for clarity and impact. Through collaborative analysis, workshop participants will gain a better understanding of effective techniques for drafting literature reviews, proposals, and other cross-disciplinary texts. Workshop participants are then invited to share short excerpts of their writing for constructive feedback and application of revision techniques toward their own drafts.

The Writers’ Café will be held online and occasionally in-person.
