Careers in Theology and Religion

The study of theology and religion affords majors, minors and advanced degree graduates a range of employment opportunities. Most of our alumni pursue careers in humanitarian, philanthropic, religious or other nonprofit, charitable organizations. They work as educators, administrators, campus/youth/parish ministers, counselors, or spiritual directors. The study of theology and religion also helps contribute to shape your profile if you plan to enter professions such as law, medicine, business, human services, education, journalism and social work, or pursue advanced studies in these and related fields—where broad, interdisciplinary, and ethical perspectives matter.

Alumnus Benjamin Winter, '14 MAT

"Villanova’s MA Program in Theology was a transformative experience that set me on course to become a professor—and more importantly, helped me realize the lifelong joy that comes from teaching and learning. I developed relationships (continuing to this day) with passionate members of the VU community. I was exposed to a broad range of ideas and perspectives, which prepared me both for doctoral study and for the daily challenge of advancing the common good through charitable dialogue, honest listening, and action informed by justice. From the beginning interview to the closing classes needed to finish my degree, my time at VU was a whirlwind experience that catalyzed personal growth. The informed and sensitive pedagogy of exemplary teachers like Kevin Hughes, Timothy Brunk, Rachel Smith, and Allen Fitzgerald—making students from all backgrounds feel heard and welcome—was nothing short of inspiring. It’s difficult to express the gratitude I feel, and the confidence I have gained, but I imitate what I discovered at VU each day in my classroom as an assistant professor of theology at Divine Word College. Theology engages the whole human person. Becoming intimately acquainted with this discipline through graduate study at Villanova will prepare you for whatever life might throw your way."
