Kevin Crail ’24

The journey for Kevin Crail ’24 MA through Villanova University’s graduate Liberal Studies program has profoundly shaped his approach as a social studies teacher. Currently teaching government, sociology and economics to high school juniors and seniors, Crail’s pedagogical focus emphasizes the importance of engaging students with diverse disciplines and perspectives.

“One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is working with students daily, helping them think critically, engage in discussions, and develop empathy and creativity,” Crail shares. His ability to make meaningful connections across subjects reflects his interdisciplinary education, which allowed him to recognize how different fields intersect and influence one another.

Crail’s graduate education, as well as directed readings with Education Professor Jerusha Conner, PhD, expanded his understanding of the connections between history, media and power. These experiences shaped his ability to engage students in discussions that challenge their assumptions and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

By combining insights from sociology, economics and political science, Crail’s teaching methods encourage students to approach problems from a variety of angles. His belief in interdisciplinarity extends beyond theory and into practical classroom strategies, where he helps students see the broader relevance of what they’re learning.

“My education courses strengthened my pedagogy, giving me practical strategies to facilitate discussion, promote critical thinking and adapt to different learning styles,” he notes.

As the workforce continues to evolve, Crail’s emphasis on interdisciplinary learning serves as a powerful reminder that the ability to synthesize knowledge from different fields is essential for preparing students to navigate complex, interconnected challenges.
