Session Description: Sorting through quality of nutrition information available to the public and healthcare professionals can be overwhelming. Understanding, communicating, and being comfortable with not only what is known but what is unknown is an important component of competent nutrition care. Part 1 explores why it’s important to know what we don’t know, highlights resources available for practitioners, and provides a practical set of tools to make the evidence-based voice the loudest voice in the room. Part 2 provides a new depth of literature assessment skills and examines two hot topics (ketogenic and anti-diet approaches) and the evidence behind them and provides effective communication strategies for discussions with patients and consumers.

Session Description: Anti-obesity medications (AOMs) have been the subject of intense attention and scrutiny. While the ability of AOMs to facilitate weight loss is unquestioned, some wonder if the focus on pharmacotherapy will supplant comprehensive, multidisciplinary weight-related health treatment efforts. The purpose of this talk is to review the history that led to the current situation and forecast ways to incorporate medication therapy into a health-focused team-based treatment plan.

Session Description: Consumption of ultra processed foods has been linked to increased rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease. However, how does the intake of these ultra processed foods impact your daily life planning and memory capabilities? This talk will walk you through how cognitive performance may be harmed by ultra processed foods, how to identify these foods, and how to inform patients about the risks.

Session Description: This session will focus on the 2021 evidence-based dietary guidance from the American Heart Association and provide healthcare providers with key tenets of healthy dietary patterns and a greater understanding of facilitators and barriers to achieving a healthy dietary pattern. Following this overview, we will discuss how well popular dietary patterns align with this guidance by operationalizing the guidance and taking a systematic approach to evaluating ‘popular’ diets, concluding with clinical tips for communicating healthy dietary advice to patients regardless of their baseline dietary knowledge and practices.

Session Description: Women in midlife experience additional challenges with weight management, in part due to body composition changes, hormonal influences, as well as a variety of other factors, which can lead to increases in chronic disease risk. This session will summarize the latest evidence and clinical implications of weight and body composition during midlife in women and provide an overview of weight gain prevention and management in this population.

Session Description: This session will explore key features of diet patterns that have been associated with a lower risk of CKD progression and all-cause mortality, as well as potential mechanisms by which they may exert benefits. Participants will take a deep dive into the strength of evidence on a variety of dietary restrictions and explore new recommendations in this area along with practical guidance for patients and families.

Session Description: This presentation will review various aspects of mental health to consider when working with patients and clients. A literature review will discuss both the breadth and depth of the current research on nutrition and mental health, including gaps in the literature.  Throughout the presentation, clinical pearls help you make connections with your patients and clients through incorporating an assessment and understanding of their mental health into your practice as part of a whole-person approach to care.
