Annual Villanova Law Review Norman J. Shachoy Symposium, 2/19

Practical Ethics in Corporate Law: The Science, Instruction and “Real-World” Application

Friday, February 19, 2021

8:50 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Virtual Event

The 2021 Annual Villanova Law Review Norman J. Shachoy Symposium, co-sponsored by the David F. and Constance B. Girard-diCarlo Center for Ethics, Integrity and Compliance, will examine a variety of issues relating to the social science, pedagogy, and practical application of practical ethics within corporate law. Distinguished researchers, instructors, and practitioners will discuss the science of behavioral ethics, its teachings, its evolution, and its application in today’s corporate world.

Lawyers are routinely thrusted into ethical dilemmas that rules of professional conduct do not address. Numerous scholars have worked to unpack one simple, yet complicated question: Why do people behave unethically?

To add to the conversation, this Symposium analyzes three areas in which lawyers should understand the impact of unethical behavior. First, what does science tell us about our capacity as individuals to behave ethically or unethically? Next, how have educational institutions and corporations gone about addressing and instructing ethical behavior? Specifically, how have institutions addressed practical ethics in the corporate law sphere? Lastly, what can “real-world” scenarios tell us about practical ethics in corporate law?

This lecture is approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for 3 Ethics Distance CLE credits. Please note registration is required. Attendees will receive an email from Eventbrite with the Zoom link on the day of the event.

The annual Villanova Law Review Symposium is named for Norman J. Shachoy '58 COE, '61 CWSL who served as Editor-in-Chief, Volume Six of the Villanova Law Review. The naming was made possible through his generous support, along with that of his son N. James Shachoy '86 CWSL.
