AlcoholEdu® and SAPU
AlcoholEdu® for College and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates
AlcoholEdu for College and SAPU courses open on July 10, 2023.
AlcoholEdu® for College and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (SAPU) are objective, science-based, online alcohol abuse and sexual assault prevention programs designed specifically for college students as the cornerstone of a comprehensive campus prevention program.
The purpose of the courses is to prevent or reduce alcohol-related problems and incidents of sexual violence among college students while providing a statistically accurate description of the related attitudes, experiences, behaviors of students. Both courses are key components of Villanova University’s Health Promotion program.
Backed by research:
- Nearly two decades of Villanova students have taken the courses, with an increase of up to 30% between pre-post exam. Students are demonstrating significant knowledge gains as a result of the course.
- Rigorous evaluation concluded that students who completed the program experienced a 50% reduction in negative academic and personal consequences.
- The same evaluation concluded that students increased protective behaviors of others (e.g., watching out for their friends).
The first part of AlcoholEdu (Part I) takes roughly 2 hours to complete and can be completed in multiple sittings. Part I of SAPU takes approximately 30 minutes. Students can log in and out of both programs. Part I of each course ends with an exam and survey (for those over age 18). Students must earn a minimum score of 75% or higher to pass and receive credit for completion of the courses.
The second parts of AlcoholEdu and SAPU (Part II) include short modules and a survey. Approximately 45 days after completing Part I of both courses, students will receive an email invitation to return and complete Part II.
Deadlines for completing these courses will be announced over the summer.
AlcoholEdu® for College and SAPU include a number of surveys that measure students’ alcohol-related and sexual violence-related attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are strictly confidential. Villanova University will only receive information about the first year student body as a whole and will never see individual student responses. Students can feel confident in providing truthful responses to the survey questions. Students who are under age 18 at the time they are taking the course will not receive any of the surveys, but they will still complete the rest of the course curriculum.
All instructions for AlcoholEdu and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (SAPU) will be emailed to incoming students in July 2023. Students CANNOT begin the courses until they open on July 10.

First and foremost, we congratulate you for choosing to abstain. There are many other students at Villanova who are making the same choice. In fact, more than half of you are non-drinkers!
However, it is important to recognize that students are affected by their peers’ decisions around alcohol during their Villanova experience. It is important that every student is equipped with accurate and credible information about alcohol so that they can make safer, responsible choices for themselves and encourage their peers to do the same. Chances are that, even if you do not drink, you will encounter someone who does. And, we know that more than 70% of sexual assaults on college campuses involve alcohol. If you think about it, the information in AlcoholEdu® and SAPU could help to save a life, keep someone from getting hurt, or reduce someone’s risk for poor academic performance as a result of alcohol use. AlcoholEdu® for College and SAPU are key elements of this support for healthy choices.
