PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Certificate in Healthcare Design & Innovation provides the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to manage the increasing complexities of the rapidly changing healthcare landscape. An interdisciplinary approach offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to retool, advance, and expand leadership skills and professional knowledge.

Drawing on the expertise of a diverse group of faculty, including instructors from the Villanova School of Business and the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing, the Certificate in Healthcare Design & Innovation helps leaders achieve their maximum potential and learn innovative solutions that lead to tangible business results. Whether you are patient-facing or on the business side of the industry, you will be encouraged to go beyond your comfort zone in experiential exercises that encourage you to gain new perspectives and leverage skills that can help you launch the next level of your career. Participants will explore creative yet practical strategies that can be implemented immediately.

Each four-week course includes live evening sessions where participants interact and exchange ideas with others in the industry without taking time away from the workplace.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The Certificate in Healthcare Design & Innovation consists of four courses which provide leadership and technical skills specific to the healthcare industry.

Examine value-driven leadership that is customer-focused with healthcare knowledge. Learn how to assemble teams that can envision the future, navigate complexity and uncertainty during rapid change, assess risk preparedness and tolerance—all while innovating and improving access to care.

Examine the opportunities, challenges, and ethical implications of digital technology and big data on healthcare. Analyze how data can provide visual insights, predict trends, and enhance overall public health.

Gain an understanding of basic economic theory, market drivers, healthcare financing and reimbursement, and cost/benefit analysis. Explore relationships among local, state, federal and global structures and processes involved in healthcare policy formation.

Understand the fundamentals of supply chain management while identifying the unique aspects of healthcare supply chains, including the changing expectations of the consumer and regulated nature of the industry. Explore how insightful management of supply chains can lead to better healthcare.


Earn a certificate and digital badge: Participants in this non-credit program will be awarded a certificate for successful completion of the program. Participants will also earn a digital badge which can be posted to a LinkedIn profile, resume, or other social media.

  

HOW IT WORKS

Each online course takes place over a four-week period. Courses include two hours of live instruction and, outside of class sessions, approximately two hours per week on readings and exercises.

MEET THE FACULTY

Helene Burns, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Helene Burns, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Dr. Helene Burns is Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer at Jefferson Health New Jersey and has over 40 years of experience in the health care industry.

Dr. Burns has overall responsibility for patient care services and nursing operations for 656 beds at the three Jefferson New Jersey Hospitals, with oversight of its more than 1,400 registered nurses and Department of Nursing staff.

Under her leadership, Jefferson Health New Jersey received its first Magnet Designation® in 2018 and is seeking re-designation in 2023. Dr. Burns led the design of $349M hospital towers with intensive, intermediate, medical-surgical care nursing units, and surgical suite designs at two JH-NJ hospitals engaging frontline leaders and clinical staff. Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital tower opened in 2020 and Jefferson Washington Township Hospital tower opened in 2021.

As a member of the Organization of Nurse Leaders New Jersey (ONL-NJ), Dr. Burns serves on the board and serves as president for the 2022-2023 term.

Kathleen Iacocca

Kathleen Iacocca, PhD

Dr. Kathleen Iacocca is an Associate Professor of Management & Operations at the Villanova School of Business. She holds a Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management from Rutgers Business School.

Dr. Iacocca's research interests include optimization and supply chain management with applications in the healthcare industry. Her current work considers relationships in the pharmaceutical supply chain that improve efficiency and yield cost savings. Another project that she is working on examines the current pharmaceutical distribution and pricing structure in the United States.

Her research has been published in journals including Pharmaceutical Executive, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing, and Socio-Economic Planning Sciences.


 

Russ Kliman

Russ Kliman

Russ Kliman leads SEI’s strategic investment arm which focuses on partnering with and investing in entrepreneurs who want to change the world with the power of technology.

SEI’s thesis is to partner and invest in emergent and potentially disruptive technologies or business models that are redefining a sector or creating a new one. In addition to leading SEI’s strategic investment arm, Russ is also responsible for supporting various innovation programs across SEI. This includes launching and teaching SEI’s inaugural 12-week design thinking curriculum, being an executive advocate for human-centered design and the use of open innovation, and supporting various innovation pitch competitions for summer interns, recent college graduates, and various teams across SEI.

Throughout Russ’ career, he has had leadership roles in technology, product strategy, user experience design, marketing, innovation strategies, and strategic investments for several businesses, ranging from startups to billion-dollar enterprises. Russ’ tenure with SEI includes additional roles in working with SEI’s global ecosystem of clients, engaging with executive leaders and facilitating conversations on strategy, ideation, and envisioning future growth opportunities.

Russ also serves as an adjunct professor at Villanova University’s School of Business’ Executive MBA program, focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship, and value creation through technology. Russ equally serves as an adjunct professor at Drexel University’s LeBow School of Business, focused on innovation and design thinking at the Executive Doctorate level and lecturing on Fintech for undergraduates. Russ holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Design from Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics.

Kurt Miceli, MD

Kurt Miceli, MD

Dr. Kurt Miceli serves as Senior Vice President of Adult Behavioral Health for Elwyn, one of the nation’s longest-running human services organizations.

Previously he had served as Chief Medical Officer for Elwyn during the first eighteen months of the COVID-19 pandemic. In his current role, Dr. Miceli oversees adult behavioral health operations in six states offering an array of services from residential to outpatient.

Prior to Elwyn, Dr. Miceli was the Chief Medical Officer for Bancroft, and President of Marcroft Medical Associates, a psychiatric and neurology medical practice he founded. Additionally, at Bancroft Dr. Miceli transformed quality assurance functions and served as the executive decision maker for all health care matters. Other significant experience and leadership positions include: Medical Director for Crisis Services at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Medical Director of Carson Valley Children’s Aid, and President of the Medical Staff at Fairmount Behavioral Health.

Over the past ten years Dr. Miceli has developed and taught two courses in health care economics for Villanova University’s MBA program. He has always found his time in the classroom to be rewarding and invigorating, particularly given the caliber of students.

Dr. Miceli received his BA in Economics and BS in Biology from Villanova University, his MBA from the University of Virginia Darden Graduate School of Business, and MD from Drexel University College of Medicine.
 

Ricardo Silva, PhD

Ricardo Silva, PhD

Dr. Ricardo Silva is a pracademic (practitioner-academic), with 20+ years of academic experience in various countries.

At Villanova, he is professor of the Health Information Technology graduate certificate. His research line at Villanova is focused on 4th generation, evolutionary artificial neural networks. He also has an active collaboration with L2C Partners, an outsourced technology transfer and commercialization service for educational institutions and research centers.

As a practitioner, Dr. Silva is founder and chief innovation officer of Alluriam, a disruptive startup in healthcare, and he is also senior consultant for the World Health Organization, working on the development of the Universal Health Coverage Compendium, the Medical Device Information System and the One Health Tool, all expert systems to support the global provision of care.

As a trailblazer, Dr. Silva has been leading healthcare digital transformation in various countries and on various fronts, from telemedicine to public policy. Dr. Silva enjoys his work, and he believes in the transformational power of education. He teaches by practice and practices by teaching. Prior to Villanova, he was President and Provost of the “17 de Julio” Community College in Ecuador, where he established academic-industrial partnerships with ten Fortune 500 companies and secured over $20M of funding for the institution.

Dr. Silva holds a BE in Electronics, a MS in Biomedical Engineering from Simon Bolivar University in Venezuela, a PhD in Integrative Biosciences from Penn State University, and is completing an EMBA from Crummer Business School at Rollings College.

Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
