25 Villanovans Win Fulbright U.S. Student Grants for 2023-24
The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board have announced the Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for 2023-24, with 25 Villanova University students and alumni receiving the competitive grant. In addition to the 25 award recipients, 5 Villanovans were selected as alternates and 15 earned recognition as semi-finalists. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, offering students grants to conduct research, study and teach abroad. Villanova has been listed among the nation’s top producers of Fulbright Students for more than a decade.

Villanova Global Interdisciplinary Studies Professor Receives U.S. Fulbright Scholar Award
Samer Abboud, PhD, associate professor of Global Interdisciplinary Studies in the Villanova University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a prestigious 2023-2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar grant by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Beginning in January 2024, Abboud will serve as a Fulbright Canada Research Chair in North American Politics at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

Rahul Thapa ‘21 CLAS Named a 2023 Knight-Hennessy Scholar
Rahul Thapa ’21 CLAS is among 85 students from around the world to be selected as a prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholar to further his education at Stanford University. Beginning in fall 2023, Thapa will receive full funding to pursue his PhD in Biomedical Informatics at Stanford School of Medicine, and he will join a community cohort of multidisciplinary and multicultural scholars who, in addition to their studies, will receive purposeful leadership development training and experiential learning aimed at empowering them to effect large-scale positive impact on the world.

Villanova University Receives $20 Million Gift from Bancel Philanthropies
Villanova University President, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, today announced a $20 million gift from Bancel Philanthropies to support students enrolled at Villanova as part of the University’s partnership with The Posse Foundation, one of the most prestigious college access, success and youth leadership development programs in the U.S. This transformational gift is the largest to fund scholarships in the history of Villanova and will fully cover the undergraduate education of a total of 50 Posse Scholars over the next five years.

Villanova University Juniors Named 2023 Goldwater Scholars
Villanova University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences juniors Stefanie (Stef) Allen and Gina Ngo have been named 2023 Goldwater Scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Allen and Ngo were selected from more than 1,200 institution-nominated students nationwide and will receive scholarships to further their research in STEM fields. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 and is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
