Regulations and Requirements
Students accepted into the combined program in a particular semester must follow the rules and regulations established at the time of their acceptance. Students who are interested in the combined program should discuss their plan with the Director of the Applied Statistics program as early as possible (even before applying!) to make sure that they take the right courses. They should then apply to the program as soon as they meet the eligibility requirements (including junior status). Students who wish to complete the combined program with just one year of graduate study should plan to take four graduate courses as an undergraduate.
To obtain the BS/MSAS degree, students must:
- Complete ten courses (30 credits)
- Maintain at least a 3.00 Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Pass the Applied Statistics Comprehensive Examination
BS/MS program typical schedule:
- STAT 7500 (fall of junior year) and STAT 8406 (spring)
- STAT 8400 (fall of senior year) and STAT 8401 (spring)
- STAT 8412 (fall) and five electives as a graduate student
- Alternate schedules are also possible.
Course equivalents for undergraduates:
- While a student is an undergraduate, up to four courses may be counted toward both the BS and MS degrees simultaneously.
- Only courses with graduate numbers may double-count.
- Even students who are not in the combined program may double-count courses with graduate numbers.
To take a graduate course, an undergraduate student must:
- Complete a permission card and write BS/MS next to the student's signature
- Have the BS advisor and the Director of the Applied Statistics program sign the card
- Take the completed card to the Office of Graduate Studies for processing
Grades and Grade Point Averages
A student may withdraw from the combined program at any time by submitting a request in writing to the Director of the Applied Statistics program. While enrolled in the combined program, a student must maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.00 in courses that count towards the MS in Applied Statistics.
Fee structure for the BS/MS program:
- While a student is an undergraduate, graduate courses are charged at the undergraduate rate.
- While a student is a graduate student, graduate courses are charged at the graduate rate.
- For students in the combined program, the final graduate course is tuition-free.
Graduate Assistantships
If a student in the combined program wants to apply for a graduate assistantship or tuition scholarship, they should contact the Director of the Applied Statistics program directly. The application deadline is March 1 for funding that starts in the fall. Since the number of positions is very small, the positions are quite competitive.
