UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIPS: EXTERNAL OPPORTUNITIES

Both national awards and external and international opportunities to engage in research are available to undergraduate students.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program awards scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in science, math, and engineering. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university using the official online nomination process on the Foundation's website.

The Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute Summer Scholars Program (CRISSP) is a competitive internship designed to provide undergraduate students with theoretical knowledge, practical training in academic research, and critical exposure to pediatric-focused research career trajectories under the direct mentorship of CHOP faculty. Applicants select the track that most interests them (basic/translational, clinical, or behavioral research) and are paired with a faculty mentor/research team from this track.

• Ten-week program, 40-50 hours per week
• Clinical shadowing opportunities
• Conduct an Independent research project, that is presented at the conclusion of the program
• Weekly professional development sessions
• $5,000 stipend and free housing

  • Minimum 3.3 overall GPA
  • Interested in research related to child health and wellness
  • Sophomores, juniors, and seniors graduating in the Spring
• Application opens in December and closes January 31, 2024 at 11:59pm EST
  

International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experiences (IAESTE) is a global organization promoting intercultural exchange between students in STEM fields across the globe. IAESTE has more than 80 official member countries that collaborate to host and send students abroad for technical internships each year. During the internship, students travel to host countries in the IAESTE network where they complete paid internships at companies, universities, and research organizations.

• Participants receive a stipend that generally covers at least the cost of living in their host city
  
• Housing accommodations and other administrative services, such as assistance with the visa process, are provided by the IAESTE organization in the respective host country
• Eligibility at a glance
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a technical field (STEM + Applied Arts, including Architecture) at an accredited four-year university
  • U.S. citizenship is not required
  • Applicants should be rising juniors or above by the time the internship begins
  • Applicants should be between the ages of 19-30

The STEM Summer Research Programs abroad will challenge students' academic knowledge and critical thinking skills while opening up a whole world of cultural, societal and historic experiences. Students can choose from a variety of summer research programs available through Arcadia Abroad and international partner institutions in England, Spain, Ireland and Scotland.
