Leading Business into the Future

VSB celebrated its 100th anniversary throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, under the leadership of Dean Emeritus Joyce E. A. Russell, PhD. Over the past 100 years, VSB has created a learning environment unprecedented in the world of business education–one that transforms lives and positively impacts society while developing ethical business leaders.

From the early years of the Division of Commerce and Finance with five undergraduate specializations, VSB now offers seven undergraduate majors, two undergraduate co-majors, ten minors, eight graduate programs and several executive programs, and hosts five Centers of Excellence! VSB continues to attract and retain world-class faculty, staff and students, deepening a vast global network of business leaders striving to make the world a better place by living out Villanova’s Augustinian values.

VSB is grateful for all those who have been part of making VSB the outstanding business school it is today and who helped celebrate our 100th anniversary.

VSB History

Villanova University dates back to 1842, when the Augustinians from Saint Augustine’s Church in Philadelphia purchased the 200-acre “Belle Air” estate in Radnor Township with the intention of starting a school. The first classes at Villanova College followed a traditional liberal arts curriculum, typical of most mid-19th-century schools.

Eighty years later, in 1922, the Division of Commerce and Finance was established as part of a larger trend in higher education at the time to offer more specialized coursework in fields such as business, nursing and engineering. While much has changed over the past 100 years, VSB’s founding principles have stood the test of time: a well-rounded business education rooted in a liberal arts foundation; a focus on experiential learning and real-world application; and the pursuit of excellence in business education guided by our Augustinian Catholic values.
