Dear Faculty and Staff,
The start of the new academic year is rapidly approaching. As I prepare to serve in my new role as Provost of our great institution, I have been reflecting on my time in higher education and the years I’ve spent at Villanova as a faculty member and Dean. I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of this great community and am excited about the opportunity to continue working with all of you who make this University exceptional. It is truly an honor.
I would like to specifically thank Fr. Peter Donohue for his leadership and for entrusting me with this new role. I look forward to working closely with him to advance toward Villanova’s ambitious goals. I would also like to thank Fr. Kail Ellis, whose service as a Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs has contributed so much to Villanova’s success. He has been a great resource during my transition.
We are in the midst of an exciting time in Villanova’s history. Because of you and those before us, Villanova has been on an upward trajectory rivaled by few in higher education. The Villanova experience is a unique and powerful one, and at the center of that experience are our faculty and staff, who contribute so much and care so deeply about Villanova’s future. As a community, we share an enormous responsibility to continue to build on this momentum, and I feel fortunate to work with you toward that goal.
As you are already aware, the creation of the Office of the Provost consolidates a variety of functions and inherently brings with it a new approach to the operation of our academic enterprise. In a separate email, I will more specifically outline that structure and potential opportunities.
Beyond sharing those details, in the coming months, my plan is to listen and learn as much as possible from all of you. I want to explore how together we can continue to build on our University’s remarkable, positive momentum. As such, I plan to arrange to visit many of your departments and programs. These meetings are an opportunity for us to get to know one another and for you to educate me about your area of expertise. My desire is to have open discussions and to hear your thoughts on everything—from what you are most proud of, to your short-term and long-term goals, to where you see opportunities and challenges as we look toward our future. Your insights and ideas are invaluable in shaping and achieving Villanova’s academic priorities and strategies.
Today’s higher education landscape is one with many opportunities and challenges. It is imperative that we navigate those while remaining true to our Augustinian, Catholic values and traditions. I am a firm believer that the best decisions result from the collective wisdom and consideration of diverse perspectives, thinking creatively, and establishing a shared vision of the future. I am excited about this opportunity and am confident that together we will propel Villanova to even higher levels of success.
I hope you enjoy these last few weeks of summer before the academic year is in full swing. I look forward to seeing you soon.
