Nurse Educator Certificate

The post-master’s Nurse Educator Certificate is designed for experienced nurses to add teaching expertise to their clinical expertise. It is also designed for nurses seeking academic teaching positions or have clinical roles that include teaching and faculty responsibilities. The program can be totally synchronist online or a combination of online and onsite classes. The goal is to prepare master’s or doctoral degree nurses to teach in the classroom, clinical environment, or online. The courses focus on curriculum theory, instructional design and technology, testing and evaluation strategies. The program of study is based on the learner’s needs and designed to accommodate busy schedules and career aspirations.

The Nurse Educator Certificate is awarded after the completion of 12 credits. Minimum time for program completion is one year. Students have five years to complete requirements for the certificate from first enrollment. Courses are offered both on-site at Villanova University and as a synchronous online format.

November 1: Spring Admission

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of online application
  • Hold a post-baccalaureate and higher degree from an accredited college or university
  • Licensure as an active registered nurse in the U.S.
  • Official transcripts from BSN and all post baccalaureate schools
  • Two professional reference letters from individuals who can comment on academic and professional abilities
  • Personal Statement describing professional goals as a nurse educator
  • Current resume

Core Courses Required - 9 credits:

  • NUR 8950 Curriculum in Nursing Education - 3 cr.
  • NUR 8951 Principles of Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation in Nursing – 3 cr.
  • NUR 8952 Teaching Strategies in Nursing – 3 cr.

Elective Courses – 3 credits – selected from the following courses:

  • NUR 9517   Structure and Philosophy of Higher Education – 3 cr.
  • NUR 8954   Practicum in Teaching Nursing – 3 cr.
  • NUR 9004   Advanced Study in Nursing - 3 cr.
  • NUR 8920   Clinical Simulation in Healthcare Education – 3 cr.
  • NUR 8980   Creative Teaching Strategies in Nursing: Using the Humanities – 3 cr.
