“I never grew up wanting to work on cars,” says McDermott, one of NovaRacing’s team captains, “but I came into Formula SAE because I saw it as an opportunity to do hands-on engineering as an undergraduate. There’s really no other club like it on campus.”
Joseph Zinno ’22 ME and Alexa Dang ’22 were among the 19 Villanovans offered grants to conduct research, study and teach abroad. Two others from the College of Engineering were recognized as semi-finalists.
NovaRacing’s car, which was built by more than 40 Villanova students over the past academic year, also took first place in fuel economy, second in endurance and third in acceleration while placing in the top 10 for design.
The 47th annual ceremony capped off a year in which more than 260 engineering students received their bachelor’s degrees, with 127 others receiving their master’s and six more receiving their doctorates.
The award honors alumni who have made outstanding contributions professionally, academically and in service to the University. In 2019, Roco founded Sanzo, the first Asian-inspired sparkling water, whose mission is to bridge cultures by connecting people to authentic flavors.
An offensive lineman for Villanova’s football team, Colin Gamroth graduated last May with a degree in Computer Engineering, achieving a 3.91 grade point average. He currently has a 4.0 GPA while working on his master’s in the College of Engineering.
