Dr. Yimin Zhang Named Faculty Fellow for Air Force Summer Program

Dr. Yimin Zhang, Research Professor at the Center for Advanced Communications (CAC) and Director of the Wireless Communications and Positioning Laboratory, has been selected as a Faculty Fellow for the 2012 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (AF SFFP). Dr. Zhang will spend 10 weeks this summer at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson, Ohio, to study distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems and improve maneuvering target tracking.

“At the CAC, we’re very proud of our continuing relationship with the AFRL at Wright-Patterson,” says Dr. Zhang, who is the Principal Investigator for an ongoing project entitled “Next-Generation Over-the-Horizon HF Radar Moving Target Indicator and Clutter Mitigation Development,” supported by the AFRL. “We hope my participation in the AF SFFP will deepen our collaboration and offer the CAC new perspectives and understanding of issues and challenges in OTHR and other radar systems. The research experience gained in solving practical problems will not only be shared with post-doctoral research fellows and graduate students within our group, but also will be integrated in classroom instructions.”

MIMO radars exploit multiple simultaneously transmitted waveforms comprising sets of orthogonal waveforms. MIMO radar systems have recently attracted increased attention, as they can expand the degrees-of-freedom in waveform design, leading to improved system performance in terms of target detection, localization, and tracking. Distributed radar systems aggregate information of targets observed from different aspect angles for further performance enhancement.

The AF SFFP is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. According to the American Society for Engineering Education, which oversees and administers the selection and appointment of applicants, the AF SFFP’s main objectives are to stimulate professional relationships among participants and scientists and engineers at Air Force research facilities, enhance the research interests and capabilities of faculty in the academic community, and elevate awareness of Air Force research interests.
