The College of Engineering’s students and faculty appeared in a variety of media outlets throughout the course of the fall semester. Just a few highlights include:
Engineering Entrepreneurship: The Philadelphia Inquirer featured the Engineering Entrepreneurship minor on the front page of its business section in October. Reporter Diane Mastrull visited a class in which representatives from the Please Touch Museum led a workshop on creativity to help students devise a new toy or game for children. Read the article.
Blast Shield Armor Research: Faculty research also appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer in November. Dr. Sridhar Santhanam, Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Gerard Jones ME ‘72, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Mechanical Engineering; and Edmond J. Dougherty EE ’69, MSCS ’86; along with Ledjan Qato MSME ’11, discussed the potential for reducing the effects of blast waves on military vehicles by building tubes filled with viscous fluid into their frames. Freshman Curriculum: Dr. Gary Gabriele, Drosdick Endowed Dean of Engineering, shared insights into the process used to update and reinvigorate the College’s first-year curriculum with Prism magazine, the official publication of the American Society for Engineering Education, for its September cover story. Student Internships: Prism magazine reporter Margaret Loftus interviewed Dr. Jones about student internships for the December issue. He discussed the traditional and alternative ways the College connects students with internships, including experiences through the Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory. Navy Yard: The Philadelphia Business Journal featured the College of Engineering’s new center of learning at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in August, just in time for the fall semester.
