NEWSLETTER
Welcome to our delayed Summer 2020 Newsletter. What an unusual year 2020 has become. I hope that this newsletter finds you and your families well as you navigate all the disruptions and changes. Personally, I had to transition all of my work from in front of a live audience to online, and I also went from living alone to having two of my daughters return home. To date, all of these changes are continuing into the fall of 2020.
This edition recaps the Spring and Summer 2020 events the VWPN sponsored as well as those we partnered in offering with The Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership. Some of the events we planned have not yet been rescheduled, but we were able to expand our virtual offerings and are planning on more such offerings this fall. Our additional columns include:
- Our column highlighting faculty features Rebecca Winer, PhD, Associate Professor of History. I’m a fan of history, and Rebecca shows us how her research is so relevant to studying and understanding women’s roles today.
- Our column highlighting an alumna features Christine Rogers-Raetsch, VP of People at Duolingo. Christine received an MA in History from Villanova as well as her MBA. I think you will enjoy her story and her advice.
- Claire Bruno, Assistant Dean, Graduate Admissions, and Director of Diversity Initiatives in VSB provides an update on the expansion of VSB’s Office of DEI.
In light of all the upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic I have penned two short columns, one explores the need and provision of paid sick leave and paid family and medical leave as well as a discussion of what is included in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. I have also included a brief column on how the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately impacted women of color.
Please keep a lookout for an email blast in September outlining our virtual fall events. As always, if there are any topics you would like to see us cover or have speakers to suggest, please let us know.
Warm wishes,
Cheryl Carleton, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Economics
