Celebrating the Engineering Class of 2013

Gray skies did not dampen the spirits of Villanova University’s College of Engineering 2013 graduating class. On Saturday, May 18, 305 undergraduate and graduate students celebrated their accomplishments at the College’s annual Recognition Ceremony held on Mendel Field.

Graduate Students Recognized

Following the ceremony’s opening address by student speaker Luke T. Ottaway ’13 ME, the College’s 79 doctoral and Master of Science candidates were recognized and presented with awards by Dr. Gerard ‘Jerry’ Jones, PhD ’72, Sr. Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. The College of Engineering Outstanding Doctoral Student Award was presented to Peiman Naseradinmousavi (photo right) for outstanding scholarship in the doctoral program and exemplary leadership and service to Villanova University and the College of Engineering. Receiving the Outstanding Graduate Student Medallion was Kailash Choudhary ’13 MSEE, who also was presented with the Outstanding Graduate Student Certificate Award for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. These Master’s degree graduates received the Certificate Award from their individual departments:

  • Eric C. Nolan ’13 MSME
  • Benaiah Anabaronye ’13 MSChE
  • Adrienne G. Donaghue ’13 MSWRE
  • Lauren A. Pugh ’13 MSSE

Presentation of the Farrell Award

Christine M. Alizzi ’13 CEE, President of the Engineering Student Council, presented the 2013 Farrell Award to Dr. Robert H. Caverly, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Microwave Electromagnetics Laboratory. The Farrell Award recognizes an engineering faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary personal concern for students. Recipients are chosen by a vote of the College’s undergraduate students.

Graduating Seniors Applauded

Alizzi’s presentation was followed by the recognition and presentation of awards for undergraduate students, led by Dr. Randy D. Weinstein, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The following students earned medallions from their individual departments for demonstrating academic excellence and leadership:

  • Michael A. Ciavarella ’13 CpE

  • Ian P. Dardani ’13 ME

President of the Engineering Alumni Society, Mr. John Happ ’85, spoke on behalf of the thousands of Villanova engineering alumni around the world. He also had the honor of presenting the prestigious Robert D. Lynch Award, which is given on behalf of the EAS to acknowledge a graduating senior for their outstanding academic achievements and exemplary dedication to serving the community. Representing the highest values of Villanova University and the College of Engineering, Ian P. Dardani ’13 ME (photo above) was this year’s Robert D. Lynch Award recipient.

The Recognition Ceremony concluded with congratulatory remarks from Drosdick Endowed Dean of Engineering Dr. Gary A. Gabriele, followed by the reciting of the Engineer’s Creed and a benediction by Dr. Stephen Jones, Associate Dean for Student and Strategic Programs.

Dr. C. Nataraj Recognized at Commencement

On Sunday, the engineering contingent joined their arts, science, business and nursing counterparts for the University’s commencement exercises. During the ceremony, Dr. C. Nataraj, Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the 2013 Villanova University Outstanding Faculty Research Award for his sustained scholarly contributions including an impressive list of prominent publications and the worldwide impact of his work in dynamic systems and non-linear dynamics.
