Moorad Sports Law Journal

About Us

The Jeffrey S. Moorad Sports Law Journal is a national legal periodical published and edited twice per year by a staff of students chosen for membership based on their performance in an Open-Writing Competition.

The Journal is committed to publishing scholarly articles on topics of importance in the sports and entertainment law fields. It serves as an interpretative guide and research tool for practitioners, academics and students on issues of law in sports and entertainment. The Journal explains the significance of recent changes or developments as well as addresses the future of law. Past volumes have included articles on copyright infringement, ERISA, gender equity, antitrust, collective bargaining, and regulation of indecent speech.

The Journal formed its staff in the fall of 1993 under the guidance of former Associate Dean Robert Garbarino. The Journal published its first volume in 1994 as the Villanova Sports & Entertainment Law Forum after receiving provisional approval from the law school faculty. In June 1995, the law school faculty granted the Forum approval as a permanent journal. In recognition of the faculty approval, the Board of Editors changed the name of Forum to the Journal.

The Journal recently changed its format from the Sports and Entertainment Law Journal to the Jeffrey S. Moorad Sports Law Journal to honor the generous donation from our esteemed alumnus Jeffrey S. Moorad.  The online branch was created in 2012 to provide a source of up-to-date research and scholarship on cutting edge legal issues in sports.

The Journal welcomes submissions of articles for consideration from lawyers, practitioners, or others in the sports and entertainment fields. Publication does not indicate that the views expressed are adopted by the journal.

The Journal's citation conform to A Uniform System of Citation (16th ed. 1996), copyrighted by the Columbia, Harvard and University of Pennsylvania Law Review and the Yale Law Journal.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mission Statement

            The Jeffrey S. Moorad Sports Law Journal is unequivocally committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in its membership and scholarship.  As a legal publication, our Journal has a responsibility to uplift underrepresented voices, remove barriers that prevent full participation in legal publication of historically marginalized groups, and create an inclusive environment for our members.

            Our Journal defines “diversity” as a range of experiences and worldviews that arise from, but are not limited to, differences in race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, first-generation status, socioeconomic status, and immigration status.  We define “equity” to mean the fair treatment and advancement for all people.  We define “inclusion” as the effort to ensure all our members and authors feel valued, supported, and appreciated.

            As a first, but significant step towards achieving these goals, our Journal has created a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Editor (“DEI Editor”) position on our Executive Board.  Further, to support the DEI Editor and the Journal’s DEI initiatives, we have created a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative Committee.  The creation of these positions signifies the importance of these issues to our Journal and our commitment to improve ourselves actively, continuously, and vehemently.

            The DEI Editor will serve a pivotal role at every stage of the membership and publication process.  This includes, but is not limited to the following tasks:

  • Strategizing, researching, and creating initiatives to actively improve diversity throughout our Journal;

  • Assisting Managing Editor of Research & Writing with drafting list of topic proposals for Staff Writers to ensure inclusion of diverse topics;

  • Assisting Managing Editor of Symposia and Special Projects in project planning such as:

  • Assisting with Symposia planning to ensure representation of diverse voices, issues, and publications;

  • Planning outreach programs;

  • Serving as contact person to address members’ concerns arising under diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Serving as a student liaison between student and faculty organizations (including Villanova University School of Law’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion);

  • Serving as Chair of DEI Initiative Committee.

We are excited to take these important steps.  However, we acknowledge that this is only the beginning.  Just as strongly as we dedicate ourselves to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we dedicate ourselves to continuous self-reflection and change for the betterment of our Journal and our contributions to the world of legal publication.
