Hashem Ashrafiuon received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1988, he joined the College of Engineering faculty at Villanova University where he is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the director of the Heterogeneous Vehicles Lab (HAVLab) and the Unmanned Surface and Underwater Vehicles Laboratory. Dr. Ashrafiuon has twice been selected as a National Research Council fellow, worked at U.S. Air Force and Army research labs, and spearheaded numerous nonlinear control projects funded by government and private companies. He is a senior editor of Journal of Vibration and Control, an associate editor for Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, a Fellow of ASME and a senior member of IEEE.

Dr. Ashrafiuon’s research interests include:

  • Nonlinear control
  • Network control of heterogeneous autonomous vehicles
  • Underactuated systems
  • Electroencephalogram signal analysis for diagnosis of brain disorders
