Create Accessible Tables

The purpose of using tables is to present tabular information. Sighted users can visually scan a table and make visual associations between data in the table and their appropriate row and/or column headers.

A visitor with visual barriers may not be able to make those associations. By using proper labeling, a screen reader can navigate through data tables one cell at a time, and they will hear the column and row headers spoken to them.

There are two types of tables:

  • Simple tables – having one header row.
  • Complex tables – having multiple header rows.

Simple tables are more accessible than Complex ones as they are easier for text readers to interpret.
