Alternative Text for Images

Alternative (ALT) Text for images serves as a text alternative to describe what cannot be seen for someone visually impaired.

Alternative text should:

  • Be descriptive but concise regarding the image subject. No more that 125 characters.
  • Make sense if someone were to read it aloud (as from a text reader).
  • Should not include the words "photo of" or "image of" since it is assumed.
  • Can be left blank if the image is decorative only and has no context to what is on the page.

Note: The AEM Authoring tool has a field associated with every image element that gives you the ability to enter in alt text.

Images that only add visual decoration to the page and not information that is important to understanding the page.

Do one of the following:

  • Leave blank
  • Put the word "decorative" in the alt text

Images that convey actions, such as buttons.

Do one of the following:

  • Describe the functionality of the link or button within the alt text
  • Use a button component, rather than the visual image.

Images with text embedded in the image.

This should be avoided for the following reasons:

  • The text is flattened and cannot be read through a text reader.
  • Even if the visitor does not use a screen reader, the text might not be readable from a lack of contrast between the text and the image background. This would be a barrier for individuals who are have color contrast or low vision disabilities.

If an infographic is necessary:

  • Text alternative should be available within context to the graphic such as adding a caption to the image.

Exception to this rule is the use of a logo.
