Following Your Passion in Human Resources

For more than 15 years, Eden S. Braun, SPHR, SHRM-CP worked in the financial services industry at some of the area’s leading venture capital firms and hedge funds. Primarily working in operations, she also had human resource responsibilities that grew into a large portion of the role. Realizing she had a passion for her human resources, she decided to pursue a career with HR as her primary focus. To do that, she enrolled in Villanova University’s College of Professional Studies, which prepared her to sit for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP®) exam and successfully earn the respected SHRM-CP credential.

Before she enrolled in Villanova’s College of Professional Studies HR program, Eden did her research. She spoke with professionals in her network who had gone through Villanova’s program to prepare for certification and to strengthen their knowledge in human resource management. “It was actually an easy decision for me, because once I started looking into it, I realized Villanova is a recognized leader in human resources studies,” she said.

After sitting in the first testing group for the newly minted SHRM-CP credential, Eden obtained an HR management position at Environmental Standards, Inc., a national environmental consulting firm, where she is a member of the Executive Committee and is responsible for strategic planning and directing all HR services, policies, and programs across the organization. She recounted that even during the interview process she was asked about her credentials and felt both her certifications and studies at Villanova helped her secure the position. Reflecting on what holding a credential means, Eden said, “You’re recognized as having a superior level of knowledge in the HR field from an objective certifying body. The knowledge you have is current, as you’re required to maintain your certification by earning recertification credits regularly. And your colleagues really value those letters behind your name. It’s not an accident that I landed at Environmental Standards, Inc. where professional development and certifications are valued and recognized.”

Starting the journey into a second career can be intimidating, but for Eden it was the right decision. “You know you love HR when you enjoy reading about it and learning new things even when you’re not working. It’s not just my career, it’s my passion.”
