Virtual Event
The Second Annual Villanova Law Professional Football Negotiation Competition will be held virtually on February 25-26, 2022. The competition is a two-day event that will feature students from around the country negotiating deals for three different NFL unrestricted free agents. Judged by Villanova Law alumni and practicing professionals, students will develop oral advocacy, negotiation and presentation skills, while also building an understanding of NFL contracts and the salary cap.
This year’s competition will be held virtually. All competitors will compete in three negotiations during the pool play round on Friday, representing either the player or team side. The top teams based on the aggregate score over the course of three negotiations will advance to Saturday. There, competitors will give a 15–20-minute presentation to Andrew Brandt, Executive Director of the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law and Professor of Practice, and a panel of judges about an unrestricted free agent’s strategy for the 2022 NFL off-season. Awards for top team and best oralists will be announced at the conclusion of the event on Saturday.
Registration: $100 per team (deadline: February 11, 2022)
Payments must be made at the time of registration.
The competition is open to all levels of competitors but is particularly intended for those who will potentially be competing for the first time (1Ls and first-year graduate students). Each team may consist of 2-4 students and may contain students from different schools and programs. Team members must be enrolled in a JD program or sports-specific graduate program. There is no limit to the number of coaches or professors that may observe the negotiation, but no coaching can take place during the timed rounds. A full list of rules will be emailed to competitors and coaches when player assignments are announced.
The specific times listed above are tentative and may change slightly for scheduling purposes. The dates will not be changed.
