RICHARD BOHNY ’15 MSF

Associate - AlpInvest Secondary Team

How do you feel the MSF program has allowed you to grow and transition in your career?

The MSF program allowed me to apply the skills I learned as mechanical engineering undergraduate to the financial world. Engineering was a valuable degree and stressed the importance of using critical thinking to solve complex problems. Since the MSF program supports students with a range of educational backgrounds, it teaches students to use skills already developed while also providing challenges to become a well-rounded financial professional.

How did the experience create a greater career acceleration as compared with your colleagues?

The experience provided a unique engineering / finance combination when coming out of school. This has helped my career in two ways: First, gaining entry to interviews that would not have been on the table without MSF, and second, applying an engineering mindset and strong financial education at work every day. The latter has continued to serve benefits a few years out of school, as I am able to provide a unique perspective when working with colleagues.

What your favorite experience during the program?

MSF provided a wide range of case study work in a group setting. I found these case studies intellectually stimulating and worked in groups with different classmates, providing the opportunity to absorb different viewpoints. These experiences have been directly applicable to my professional career, as they promoted creative thinking and an open mind to solving complex problems.

When you are reviewing candidate profiles, how would you assess the business case for hiring an MSF graduate versus an undergraduate student?

If an MSF candidate comes across our desk, I encourage my colleagues to focus on the strong technical background and commitment to a financial career they have demonstrated. Graduates of an MSF program have made the decision to dedicate themselves to a strong financial education. They often have a great work ethic, which coupled with a fantastic and meaningful education, makes for an attractive candidate.
