Mourning a Beloved Admission Leader
Over the course of his 42-year career in Undergraduate Admission, Michael Gaynor ’88 MS became one of the most well-known and highly respected Villanovans. He was committed to his family, to his colleagues and to Villanova–embodying the University’s Augustinian Catholic mission as he led the effort to welcome thousands of new students and families into the Villanova community through the years. Gaynor passed away on Aug. 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
“Michael’s passing is a tremendous loss for Villanova,” says the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS, University president. “His humility, wit, kindness and Augustinian spirit were immediately evident to everyone who met him. I speak for our entire community in saying we were blessed to have known him, and we honor the lasting mark he left on our University.”
Remembered as an inspiring and compassionate leader, Gaynor played a significant role in the transformation of Villanova into a top national Catholic university, particularly during his tenure as executive director of Undergraduate Admission for the past 24 years. During that time, Villanova admitted a growing number of out-of-state and international candidates, and the number of undergraduate applicants consistently broke records.
Inspired by his own family, he was a tireless advocate for students with disabilities, personally assisting many families in pursuing higher education for their children with special needs and playing an active role in making Villanova an accessible campus for all.
Gaynor was highly regarded by colleagues beyond Villanova as well. He received the Council of International Schools’ T. Michael MayburyAward for his work in international student recruitment, and he was honored with the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling’s Gary M. Kelsey Human Relations Award in recognition of his outstanding support of students.
