Major Advising Page - Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering supports study abroad and encourages all interested students to pursue the opportunity. Students can find some of the required technical courses abroad, and also gain exposure to other skills relevant to engineering such as communication, ethics, problem solving.

If possible, plan on taking at least two major-related courses while studying abroad. This will keep you on track with degree requirements and also allow you to gain knowledge of Civil and Environmental Engineering perspectives abroad.

  • Discuss your intent to study abroad as soon as possible with your academic advisor because most programs occur in your second year of study.
  • Contact the CEE study aboard advisor, Dr. Stephanie Walkup (stephanie.walkup@villanova.edu) who will help you make informed decisions specifically related to your own curriculum advancement.  Have your unofficial transcript available during any meeting.
  • Sign up and attend the First Step Information Session
  • Complete an Advising Application in the Passport Villanova Portal

Specific things to consider as you plan for your study abroad experience

  • Students with AP or transfer credits may have other opportunities for study abroad programs that are not listed on this site or may be able to take courses related to a minor or lighten course loading while abroad.
  • Many third year CEE courses have embedded laboratories that are not commonly found in international program so students are encouraged to study abroad their second year.
  • Many upper-level CEE courses have course pre-requisites, so it is not always possible to take courses out of sequence.

Search the OEA Course Approval History database to select from more than 3,000 study abroad courses that have already been pre-approved for liberal education requirements and a growing list of technical courses.

The Course Approval History database is not all-inclusive and students can work with an OEA advisor to submit additional courses for review.

The following Partner Programs and Universities have been identified as offering curriculum matches for Civil and Environmental Engineers. Each option lists the classes that students typical take while abroad, along with the semester when most students go abroad to that location. 

*Villanova University - Irish Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG)
Sophomore Year - Spring Semester

 You will enroll in five courses:

You will enroll in only four classes; one class during an intensive session and three classes during a shortened semester. The calendar runs from early January through mid-May.

Study abroad opportunities are not limited to formal instruction. Consider taking advantage of the unique research, internship, and fieldwork opportunities available in different regions of the world. 

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a Villanova or program application deadlines.

There are many scholarships available for students through Villanova University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
