1950s

1957

Robert Lima ’57 CLAS, ’61 MA published a book of poetry titled Elementals, which investigates the elements of earth, air, water and fire.

1960s

1962

Donald E. Leisey ’62 MA was inducted into the Wall of Honor by the College of Education and Social Work at West Chester University.

1964

Thomas Sexton ’64 CLAS published the book Creating a Team Like No Other, a coaching- philosophy book based on the author’s 52-year coaching career.

1966

Tom Hubbs ’66 VSB received the Paul Harris Award from the Stowe Rotary Club of Stowe, Vt., for his service to the club and community. He also was reelected president of the Board of Trustees of the North Country Animal League in Morrisville, Vt.

1967

Adm. Walter F. Doran, USN (Ret.), ’67 CLAS has been named chairman of the board of the Military Officers Association of America. MOAA is a 350,000-member association that advocates for active and retired military members and their families.

Gregory S. Kuzniewski ’67 COE and his wife, Lorraine, celebrated 50 years of marriage on Dec. 21, 2018. He retired from Raytheon after 24 years as director of USMC Programs. Prior to that, he retired from the Marines after 27 years as a colonel and Harrier pilot.

Donald Sesso, MD, ’67 CLAS conducted research on the hazards of recreational marijuana and had an article published in the March issue of the Journal of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Association. Dr. Sesso is an emeritus professor of pulmonary medicine and has practiced addiction care medicine for nine years.

1968

Paul F. Cocozza ’68 CLAS joined the New York office of World Wide Land Transfer as a vice president. Paul founded PFC Title Insurance Agency in 1981, which insured residential and multimillion-dollar commercial transactions in New York.

John E. Garcia, MBA, ’68 VSB and Mary Kay (Lally) Garcia, PhD, PNP, ’68 FCN celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 7, 2019. They met as sophomores at Villanova and married while she was serving as a Navy nurse in California and he was preparing to go to Vietnam as an Army platoon sergeant.

Richard Shea ’68 CLAS and his wife, Teresa, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2019.

1969

Alan Bodnar ’69 CLAS published Simply Human: Reflections on the Life We Share, which describes his experience of working with people who are considered different because of their psychiatric conditions. In this book, Bodnar works to highlight our common human center.

Bill Steigerwald ’69 CLAS published 30 Days a Black Man, a retelling of an undercover journalism mission in 1948. Steigerwald was a history major and an English minor. His first publication was an op-ed piece in The Villanovan.

Founder and “Chief Sock Person” of the nonprofit organization The Joy of Sox, Tom Costello Jr. ’69 COE has made it his mission to provide dignity, respect and joy to those experiencing homelessness by giving them new socks. Although he once considered himself “homeless-phobic,” Costello overcame his fear while volunteering at a shelter and learning about a serious need for new, clean, comfortable socks to help defend homeless people from foot-related health problems. Since embarking on this endeavor in 2010, Costello’s organization has distributed more than 428,000 pairs of socks to homeless men, women and children in five countries and 32 US states, plus Washington, D.C.

1970

Frank Falcone ’70 COE, ’73 MS was awarded the prestigious Excalibur Award in 2019 from Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, his alma mater.

Denis McLaughlin, JD, ’70 CLAS, ’73 CWSL was reappointed for a sixth term on the Standing Committee on the Rules of Evidence for the New Jersey Supreme Court. A new Advanced Trial Advocacy program also was endowed and named in his honor.

1971

William M. Savino ’71 VSB has been recognized by the Legal 500 in their “industry focus—insurance—advice to insurers” category.

Lawrence Ziomek, PhD, ’71 COE published his third graduate-level textbook, An Introduction to Sonar Systems Engineering, in the field of underwater acoustics.

1972

Richard W. Cohen, MD, ’72 MA, with his daughter Julia Cohen, won the USTA National Father and Daughter Clay Court Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla., in fall 2019, six months after having a heart attack during a national tennis tournament. His article "How I Became a Better Doctor" was published in the December 2019 issue of Clinical Psychiatric News.

Theodore Freeman ’72 CLAS wrote the book Acquiring Wisdom: Adhering to the Word of God From Zeal to Reveal, published by Covenant Books in April 2018.

1975

Marc R. Abrams ’75 CLAS was listed among the 2019 Super Lawyers and Rising Stars in Washington, D.C., Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Robert J. Anderson ’75 VSB has been named chairman of the board of Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives.

John DiStaso ’75 CLAS, a veteran political journalist, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40 years of reporting in New Hampshire.

1976

Michael J. Casale Jr., Esq., ’76 CWSL received a promotion at Baker Newman Noyes and is now a manager in the practice.

Terry Harris ’76 CLAS, ’93 MA wrote and published the book Honey Bunny and Little Buddy.

Ronald Steger ’76 VSB has been appointed chairman of the audit committee of Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, the largest provider of maritime construction, dredging and land reclamation services in the US.

Deborah Lerner, Esq., ’77 CWSL was re-selected to Pennsylvania’s 2019 Super Lawyers and Rising Stars list.

Anna Maria DiDio ’78 CLAS published the memoir Love at the Border: An Adoption Memoir From Mexico and now is writing a children’s book.

Lawrence Jakows ’79 VSB wrote and published the book Jesus: Perfect Love.

Domenic Melillo ’79 VSB published the final book of his Swords of Valor trilogy.

Paul Viggiano ’79 CLAS was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of the Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Sciences, in Philadelphia.

Diane Dewey ’80 CLAS published her first book, Fixing the Fates, and it won the Silver Award from the National Non-Fiction Authors’ Association.

Kevin McKenna ’83 CLAS, ’86 CWSL and Nicole Snyder ’98 CLAS, ’01 CWSL formed a law firm that specializes in educational law.

Susan French, Esq., ’84 CLAS, ’87 CWSL was welcomed as a partner at the Philadelphia-based law firm of Fineman Krekstein & Harris P.C.

1985

John Hartner ’85 COE has been elected chief executive officer at the ExOne Company.

Kelly Tompkins Lyles ’85 VSB, chief executive, client and country management, at AXA XL, was selected as the 2019 recipient of the Insurance Woman of the Year Award from the Association of Professional Insurance Women.

Frederick Murphy, MD, ’85 CLAS, who founded the nonprofit organization Enspice Children’s Foundation in 2016 with the goal to end childhood malnutrition, has partnered with a school in Madagascar to improve its nutrition program.

The Hon. Thomas J. Barbar ’86 CLAS is a judge in the Boston area.

Melina Levengood Cockeram ’86 CLAS published her second book, Breastfeeding Doesn’t Have to Suck!: Tips, Tricks & Knowledge for a Great Experience.

Wendy Greenley, Esq., ’86 CWSL published her first picture book, Lola Shapes the Sky.

One of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer has been bestowed upon Anne Roby, PhD, ’86 COE, who has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering, for distinguished contributions to engineering, particularly “developments in oxidation processes and leadership in technological developments, safety and business growth in global industrial gas companies.” In addition to her career as executive vice president of leading global industrial gases and engineering company Linde, Dr. Roby serves on the University’s Board of Trustees and formerly served on the College of Engineering Advisory Board.

Colleen Mattioni, DNP, ’87 FCN was named to the role of chief nurse executive at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for her expertise in shaping clinical and operational workflows, acuity adaptable staffing models and the patient experience.

Dawn Young ’87 COE has published her first children’s book, The Night Baafore Christmas.

Pamela Brecht ’88 CLAS, partner at Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP, and chair of the firm’s global Qui Tam practice group, was selected by the Philadelphia Business Journal as a recipient of the 2019 Best of the Bar Awards.

Lisa Hilmi ’88 CLAS was elected to the Civil Society Steering Committee for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and to the Board of Directors of the World Health Organization Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

Mary Frances McAleer, MD, PhD, ’88 CLAS was promoted to full professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she has practiced since 2006 and is internationally recognized in the field of radiotherapy for pediatric and central nervous system malignancies.

Roxolana Telepko ’88 MS has joined H-CYTE, a company providing innovative medical technology products and services, as its compliance officer.

Sylvia DeSantis ’89 CLAS released her new young adult novel, Katastrophe: The Dramatic Actions of Kat Morgan, book one of the Hidden Angel series.

Eileen Brown ’90 CLAS has been named managing partner of Thompson Coburn’s Washington, D.C., office.

Francis W. Gasper ’90 CWSL received the US Attorney General’s Award for Fraud Prevention.

1991

Charles Van Horn ’91 CLAS, a shareholder at Atlanta-based Berman Fink Van Horn, was appointed to a leadership role for the Marriott data breach case. He joined a five-person team representing financial institution plaintiffs.

1993

Jennifer Fox ’93 VSB was featured in the Philadelphia Business Journal as a Power Woman in Finance. She also was named the first female president of Wealth Management for Bryn Mawr Trust Company in December 2017.

James G. McGrory, CPA, ’93 VSB was elected chair of the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation board for the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Scott R. Mehok ’93 CLAS has joined Cozen O’Connor’s Corporate Practice Group and will be a member of its office in Harrisburg, Pa.

Dave Seminara ’94 VSB released his most recent book, Breakfast With Polygamists: Dispatches From the Margins of the Americas, a collection of more than three dozen true stories from 10 countries across the Americas.

1995

Michael Beckerich ’95 CLAS was named CEO and president of York Analytical Laboratories, Inc., and opened New York City’s first emerging contaminants laboratory in support of environmental engineers.

Walter D. Greason, PhD, ’95 CLAS was awarded the 2019 Good Fortune Award by the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation and Cultural Center, an organization founded to preserve the T. Thomas Fortune House, a national historic landmark located in Red Bank, N.J.

John Hantak ’95 CLAS was appointed president of Northern Trust Wealth Management’s Houston branch.

Mark G. McCreary ’95 CLAS was named a Pennsylvania Trailblazer by The Legal Intelligencer.

Christine Pariseault ’95 FCN, ’19 PhD completed her PhD in Nursing Education from the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. Dr. Pariseault studied nurse practitioners’ experiences of polypharmacy in older adults.

David Vahos ’95 VSB has been named a winner of the 2019 Best in Finance: CFO Award by the Baltimore Business Journal for his outstanding leadership and commitment to his community.

Kimberly Kersey ’96 CWSL has worked in the legal, business development and community relations fields for more than 20 years—and all of that expertise will come in handy in her new role as executive director of the Amistad Center for Art and Culture in Hartford, Conn. “I’m fortunate to have a broad variety of professional experiences—traditional legal, political and corporate. To be able to bring those skills, along with my love of the arts, to my new role as director of a museum is so gratifying.” Featuring a 7,000-piece collection of art, artifacts and archives that represent the experience and history of African Americans, the center celebrates the creative geniuses and everyday people who have made contributions to America’s diverse and dynamic culture.

Cmdr. Robert Marsh, ’00 COE turned over command of the US Navy Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2. For his accomplishments while in command, Marsh was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.

Elizabeth Landes ’05 CLAS, ’06 MA was presented with a 2019-20 Milken Educator Award—known as the “Oscars of teaching”—along with a $25,000 prize. Honored among 40 teachers recognized as the country’s finest, Landes, who teaches AP Environmental Science and several levels of biology at Marple Newtown High School, is the sole Pennsylvania recipient of the award and the first from the Marple Newtown School District in Delaware County. A role model for budding scientists, Landes says, “Teaching affords me the opportunity to share my love of learning with my students and to empower them to find and pursue their own passions.”

Brother Dan Madden, OSA, ’11 CLAS, ’14 MA professed solemn vows as member of the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova on Dec. 31, 2019, and on Jan. 11 was ordained to the diaconate in Chicago.

Alexander Kersten ’13 CLAS and Ashley Palmarozzo ’13 CLAS were married June 9, 2019, in Andover, N.J. Palmarozzo is pursuing her PhD at Harvard University and Kersten is pursuing his master’s degree at Tufts University.

John Allegretto ’15 CWSL has joined the Philadelphia office of Offit Kurman, P.C. He focuses his practice on employee mobility and employment litigation.

Roxanna Chalifoux, OD, ’15 CLAS graduated from Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry with a Doctor of Optometry in May 2019.

Brian Emmert ’15 CLAS earned his MD from the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in May 2019. He began his residency in neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in June 2019.

Katherine Florio ’15 CLAS and Daniel Suskevich ’15 CLAS married at St. Thomas of Villanova Church in November 2019. Florio is a podiatric surgery resident at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Suskevich is a software engineer at Lockheed Martin in Moorestown, N.J.

Lt. Kaitlyn Harmon ’15 FCN serves as the department head of the medical surgical unit at Naval Hospital Bremerton in Washington and has been recognized for her work by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses.

Angelica Lieto, Esq., ’15 CLAS, ’18 CWSL joined Fox Rothschild LLP in Exton, Pa., as an associate in the Taxation and Wealth Planning Department.

Courtney Powers ’15 CLAS was selected as a semifinalist for the 2020 Music Educator Award in recognition of her significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education.

Philanthropist, Former Trustee Remembered

Villanova alumnus and longtime, passionate supporter of Wildcats Athletics William B. Finneran ’63 VSB passed away on Nov. 12, 2019. Finneran provided the lead gift of $22.6 million that kicked off the transformation of the Pavilion, which was renamed Finneran Pavilion in his honor. A former member of the University’s Board of Trustees and a co-chair of Villanova’s “Transforming Minds and Hearts” capital campaign from 2004 to 2007, Finneran also endowed the Men’s Basketball head coaching position.

“Bill was a legendary Villanova man,” said Jay Wright, the William B. Finneran Endowed Athletic Fund Head Coach of the Villanova Men’s Basketball team. “He was also a great friend and mentor to me and my wife, Patty, from the day we arrived at Villanova. Our family, Villanova and the world will miss a genuinely good guy.”

Finneran had a long and successful career in finance, most recently as chairman and managing director of EXOP Capital LLC, a New York-based hedge fund that he co-founded in 2005. He was also dedicated to many nonprofit organizations, including the Partnership for Inner-City Education of the Archdiocese of New York, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Ireland-U.S. Council and Operation Smile.

A highly engaged alumnus, Finneran was awarded an honorary doctorate from Villanova in 1994. “We lost a great Villanovan,” said University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS. “Bill’s impact on the University, particularly Villanova Basketball, will continue to be felt by Villanovans for generations.”
