Industry Innovator
Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, Miller graduated VSB with a degree in accounting in 1979. He started at Warner Bros. Studios in 1980 and joined Walt Disney Productions in April of 1983, serving in various financial, operating, and production positions. Miller retired in 2022 as the President of Studio Operations.
Over the course of his 42-year career, Miller was an industry change agent, pioneering many technologies, negotiations, and initiatives that not only benefited Walt Disney, but the entire entertainment landscape.
Miller designed and built the industry’s first organization specializing in foreign language dubbing, setting the industry standard for localization and the global day-and-date release of motion pictures. Such work allowed Disney films to be released globally in as many as 45 languages in over 100 countries on the same day, for which he received an Outstanding Achievement in Engineering EMMY.
“I felt honored to be part of the team that launched Disney motion picture and television content into over 30 new languages and cultures,” said Miller. “Whether it was the first Mickey Mouse or Ducktales cartoons in Polish, Dumbo in Korean or The Lion King in Zulu, an entire new generation has grown up on watching content produced in their local language for the first time.”
In addition, Miller lead Disney’s transition from 35mm film to digital post-production and digital cinema, and oversaw the preservation and restoration of Disney’s treasured library. In short, Miller’s impact traverses the industry’s operation, with global audiences reaping the benefits of his innovation.
Beyond Miller’s impact on big and small screens alike, he also supports fellow industry professionals and community organizations. Miller served as an architect of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Academy Gold Development Program, a talent and development initiative helping to provide resources to underrepresented individuals to achieve their dreams of a career in filmmaking. Miller notes, “Academy Gold was designed to give new filmmakers and staff insight into the industry that we all wished we knew when we got started. It was incredibly rewarding to work with these young filmmakers in achieving their goals.”
Moreover, Miller served on the Board of Trustees for the Providence Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, supporting the construction of the Disney Family Cancer Center, the Neuroscience center, and a new Emergency department, helping to bring lifesaving capabilities to his local community.
Taken together, Miller’s industry innovations and commitment to community seek to create a global society where dreams come true.
