Giving and Growing

Imagine the pride William and Helen O’Toole felt as their son Terry O’Toole ‘80 VSB graduated summa cum laude on a Presidential Scholarship from the Villanova School of Business. 22 years later, in 2002, envision how gratifying it was for Terry to endow the VSB Deanship in their honor.

Terry O’Toole attended Villanova University on a full scholarship, without which he likely would have received an education elsewhere. He exclaimed, “the positive experience I had through the educational opportunity I was given demonstrated to me the power of that gift.” Frankly, it “changed [his] life.”

Since his graduation, Terry has shown extraordinary commitment to the university. Villanova’s growth in the past forty years has mirrored, and in some ways can be attributed to, his professional and philanthropic success.

After receiving his MBA from Stanford University, Terry began a 21-year career at Goldman Sachs where he helped found the Principal Investment Area (PIA), served as a Partner, and retired as the Chief Operating Officer of the PIA. He has since dedicated his career to philanthropy through the O’Toole Family Foundation and as an investor in young companies. He currently sits as the Founder and Managing Member at Macanta Investments LLC, a private investment entity and the Co-Founder and Co-Managing Member at Fremont Macanta, LLC.

Through the O’Toole Family Foundation, founded by Terry and his wife Polly O’Toole, he has established the O’Toole Family Presidential Scholarship at Villanova University, an innovative promise scholarship for high-achieving high school students from the Archdiocese of Newark. Just as the Presidential Scholarship changed Terry’s life, he hopes to propel other high-achieving students to success at Villanova and beyond.

Terry also served on the Board of Trustees at Villanova from 2001 to 2012, including as the Chairman of the Board from 2011 to 2012. More recently, he was the Co-Chair of Villanova’s Capital Campaign, helping to raise $750 million to increase student opportunities and financial aid at the university. He reflects: “we were able to assist in Villanova's transition from a leading regional university to a top 50 national university.”

As the 2017 recipient of The Rev. Joseph C. Bartley, OSA Alumni Medallion, VSB has certainly recognized Terry’s impact and longstanding dedication to the university. Today, there’s no need to imagine Terry’s pride where Villanova is concerned. He shares that “it has been incredibly satisfying to see Villanova grow and thrive in the four decades since my graduation, knowing that I was a small part of that growth.”
