A Sustainable Impact

Carly Whitmer ’18 VSB is using data analytics to make the world a greener, more sustainable place.

Carly Whitmer, CPA ’18 VSB has a passion for helping the world, and her Villanova studies in data analytics enabled her to have real environmental impact. She graduated as part of the collaborative KPMG Master of Accounting with Data Analytics (MADA) program. “The MADA program gave me advanced technology skills to hit the ground running in today’s data-driven accounting environment,” Carly said.

Carly, a manager at KPMG, works in the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Center of Excellence, supporting companies as they obtain the data needed to assure the validity of their greenhouse gas emissions.

Assured ESG data in the marketplace is critical for investors. Providing reliable, comparable data enables companies to unlock value and gain a competitive advantage. “Every company has an ESG story,” Carly said. “Now, more than ever, people want companies to tell that story publicly, transparently, and completely.” Carly and her team develop and manage the technology that directly impacts and informs these ESG stories.

Carly believes each of us has a responsibility to make a difference in a way that is inspiring on a personal level. To her, this means caring for the planet and all who live on it. In addition to her work in the ESG space, she volunteers with animal rescue centers in her free time. She does everything from transporting and sorting donations, to walking dogs and socializing kittens, and nursing rescue animals back to health.

Carly recognizes that all areas of business have access to create meaningful change in the world. She said, “There are countless opportunities to mesh accounting, finance, business analytics, and marketing with sustainability, human welfare, DEI, and more. Those of us at VSB are brought together by unitas. How better to embody that than working each day to ensure a better future for all?”
