STUDY ABROAD FOR CPS STUDENTS
With programs ranging from three weeks to a full semester, the College of Professional Studies encourages students to include a study abroad experience into their Villanova University curriculum. Major Advising Pages (MAPS) are designed to help with course and program selection as it frames the study abroad experience from an academic perspective.
The MAPs are not all-inclusive. If a program is not listed for a specific major, it does not limit eligibility to participate in that program. Students should discuss their specific interests with their OEA adviser for additional guidance on choosing an appropriate program.
Students should review the Study Abroad Requirements and CPS Policies and Limitations prior to program selection.

Don't see the MAP for your major? Don't worry, you can still study abroad and have options! Speak with your academic advisor and/or start the process with the OEA to explore your options.
- Courses related to CPS Major must be reviewed on an individual basis to determine if course(s) can transfer back to VU.
- VU requires students to take a language course in non-English speaking countries. If a program offers a language course, it must be taken as part of the program.
- Language courses not offered at VU, or not meeting language department criteria, may be approved as RLL 1000 which satisfies a free elective.
- Transfer credits are accepted on the basis of course equivalency and must have a course grade of C or higher. Courses will show on the student’s transcript with a “T” grade and will not impact a student’s GPA.
- There are some VU programs with standard graded courses (in instances where VU is doing the teaching).
- Students wishing to enroll in VU distance learning courses while abroad must petition approval to take courses while abroad.
- The following courses cannot be taken abroad: CPS 1001, CPS 1100, CPS 1150, CPS 1002, CPS 3000, CPS 4000, ENTR 5000, HRMG 5000, ISYT 5000, LDR 5000, ODM 5000
- A maximum of 90 credit hours are transferable towards a CPS degree including AP, study abroad, and all other transfer credits.
- The final 30 credits of a student’s degree must be taken at Villanova.
- Transfer credits may be used for no more than half the courses required for the degree, no more than half the courses for the major, minor or concentration and no more than half the courses required for the core curriculum.
- Some CLAS departments further limit the number of study abroad classes that can be applied to the major or minor. Students are responsible for confirming any limitations with their major or minor department.
Semester:
- CPS students will be charged the equivalent of 15 CPS credits for a semester abroad.
- Tuition Remission Students : According to tuition remission policies, tuition remission does not apply to Study Abroad. Employee dependents will be charged by Villanova the cost of the overseas program’s tuition, plus a $500 VU administrative fee.
- All participants are responsible for the room and board expenses to be paid directly to the overseas partner program or host.
Summer/short term Programs:
- For Villanova summer and short-term programs, students are charged the full program fee by Villanova.
- For Partner Programs abroad, students are responsible for paying the full program fee directly to the overseas Partner Program, along with a $500 Administrative fee paid to Villanova.
Veterans and VA Educational Benefits
- Veterans should discuss their viability for studying abroad with their academic advisor and Villanova’s Veteran and Military Enrollment Services School Certifying Official.
It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a Villanova or program application deadlines.
There are many scholarships available for students through Villanova University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
