National Law Journal Ranks Villanova No. 38 ‘Go-To’ Law School

The National Law Journal has ranked Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law as the No. 38 “go-to” law school in its 2016 rankings. This annual report identifies the top 50 law schools with the highest percentage of 2015 juris doctor (JD) graduates hired as first-year associates at the nation’s 100 largest law firms. Read more

 

Mark C. Alexander, JD, Appointed New Dean of Charles Widger School of Law

Donation Establishes the Adler Collection on the International Criminal Court

Founded in 2002, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world’s only permanent, treaty-based international criminal court, and Villanova Law alum Enid Adler ’83 aided in its creation. Last summer, Adler donated materials to the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law Library to establish the Adler Collection on the International Criminal Court. Three Recent Alum Receive Pro Bono Distinction Award

The Philadelphia Bar Association recently recognized Steve Bertil ’16, Azadeh Erfani ’16 and Rachel Silver ’16 with the 2016 Eve Biskind Klothen Law Student Pro Bono Distinction Award—given to students from area law schools for their outstanding pro bono and public interest work during law school. CARES Receives Light of Liberty Award for Dedicated Service to Immigrants

The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC) recently honored Villanova Law’s Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services (CARES) with the Light of Liberty Pro Bono Law Firm award for its dedicated service to vulnerable immigrants in detention and in the community. Read more

 

Recent Villanova Law Alum Wins JPTOS 2016 Mid-Atlantic Writing Competition

From orientation to graduation, Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law provides students with a solid foundation in legal writing, analysis and research. With six semesters of writing instruction, graduates like Jessica Watkins ’16 are prepared to meet the intense demands of the legal industry and often recognized for their hard work by the external legal community. Philadelphia Bar Association awards Steve Bertil ’16 Irvin Stander Award

The Philadelphia Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section named Steve Bertil ’16 recipient of the 2016 Irvin Stander award for excellence in administrative law. A testament to Bertil’s accomplishments, this distinctive honor is given to an outstanding graduating law student who has demonstrated legal acumen in administrative law or workers’ compensation. Frannie Reilly ’04 has extensive experience counseling clients on corporate policies, best practices and corporate governance and started her own firm in June 2014, focusing her practice on individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Reilly also founded and runs a nonprofit education foundation—the Foundation for Wallingford-Swarthmore Schools—which works to ensure that teachers and students continue to promote innovation, creativity and excellence, especially in difficult economic times.

Matthew A. Homyk ’11 is an associate at Blank Rome LLP, where he concentrates his practice in intellectual property matters and related business issues confronting companies and individuals in many industries—including fashion, e-commerce, social networking, insurance, musical instruments and building materials. He was recently named one of Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2016 “40 Under 40,” which recognizes young professionals in the Greater Philadelphia region for outstanding success and contributions to their community. Homyk also teaches trademark law as an Adjunct Professor at Villanova Law and is a member of the Radnor Township Zoning Hearing Board.

Duke Law

Charles J. Dunlap Jr. ’75 is a Professor of the Practice of Law and the Executive Director of the Center on Law, Ethics and National Security at Duke Law. His teaching and scholarly writing focus on national security, international law, civil-military relations, cyberwar, airpower, counter-insurgency, military justice and ethical issues related to the practice of national security law. Prior to teaching, Dunlap spent more than 34 years in the Air Force as a military lawyer, during which his practice included everything from leading legal offices both in the U.S. and abroad, to serving as military judge, to participating in several operations in the Middle East and Africa.
