Dr. Michelle D.S. Boakye Selected as American Diabetes Association Scholar
Following a competitive application process, Michelle D.S. Boakye, PhD, MPH, RN was selected to be an American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scholar for one year, beginning at the American Diabetes Association 83rd Scientific Sessions in San Diego June 23-26. The 2023 ADA Scholars program is supported in part by restricted educational grants from Helmsley Charitable Trust and MannKind Corporation.
“I’m excited to be selected for the ADA scholar’s program. It’s a dream come true to be mentored by leaders in the field of diabetes research and practice within this reputable organization. This program will contribute to my leadership development and career as a diabetes research scientist,” notes Dr. Boakye.
Dr. Boakye is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. She is completing a one-year mentored fellowship in integrated diabetes management awarded by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists Foundation and the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education.
During her fellowship year, Dr. Boakye is developing and pilot testing a web-based tool, called iConcern, to facilitate discussions and aid in identifying diabetes management challenges of individuals newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The tool will facilitate discussions within the primary care setting and enable a person living with diabetes to identify and share their pressing concerns about the diagnosis.
Dr. Boakye’s mentors are Christina R. Whitehouse, PhD, AGPCNP-BC, CDCES, FADCES, Coach Bennett Endowed Assistant Professor; Professor Bette Mariani, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs; and Bridgette M. Brawner, PhD, MDiv, APRN, The Richard and Marianne Kreider Endowed Professor in Nursing for Vulnerable Populations.
