Congratulations to our student award winners! The medallion of excellence award winners are Fikayo Ajeigbe (sociology) and Paisley Hahn (criminology). The McGarry award winner is Jameson Ford (sociology).

Fikayo Ajeigbe earned The W.E.B. Du Bois Medallion for Academic Excellence

"I am extremely honored to receive the W.E.B. Du Bois Medallion of Excellence in Sociology. Over the past 4 years I have been able to grow in my love and understanding of Sociology. In addition, I have taken this knowledge and applied it to every class I have taken at Villanova. I would like to thank my classmates and professors in the Sociology and Criminology department who have made the classroom a community of learning and encouragement. Looking ahead, I am eager to carry forward the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, utilizing my newfound skills to contribute to creating a more just and equitable society. "

"I am honored to receive the Edward Sutherland Medallion of Excellence in Criminology. I am grateful to all my professors in the Department of Sociology and Criminology for sharing their diverse areas of expertise, introducing me to a wide variety of theories, and the myriad challenges of our criminal justice system. I look forward to taking the knowledge and skills that I have gained at Villanova into graduate school and a career working towards a more equitable and just society."

"I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the 2024 Lawrence J. McGarry Award. My journey as a Sociology major and a Criminology minor at Villanova has broadened my perspective on the world. To my professors and mentors, I would like to thank you for your guidance and for creating an environment where I was able to flourish and be my authentic self. To my family and friends, I am so grateful for your belief in me and for being a source of strength in my life. To my parents, I am nothing without you, thank you for all that you do for me. As I look ahead to the future, I am committed to dedicating my life to others, advocating for justice, and letting the essence of my character shine through in all that I do."

This award is presented to a graduating student who best combines "Academic Excellence with a Commitment to Social Justice." Dr. McGarry was a member of the Sociology Department from 1963 until 2004. A deeply spiritual man, Dr. McGarry was a quiet yet relentless advocate for social justice. Generosity and a deep-seated concern for others were two of the outstanding qualities that made him a special human being. Each year he made significant contributions to a number of a non-profit organizations serving the poor. He always maintained a cordial and helpful relationship with his students, never failing to greet each of them with a smile. He was an esteemed colleague and an excellent teacher who was respected by four generations of students. His colleagues honored him for his commitment to his students and the less fortunate by establishing this award.
