Villanova University announced that its Board of Trustees has elected Elizabeth T. Mazzeo ’81 VSB, a special advisor and the former Chief Administrative Officer of Bloomberg LP, as its chairperson. Mazzeo succeeds Justin G. Gmelich, who served as chair of the Board of Trustees since 2021. The University also announced the election of Thomas M. Quindlen ’84 VSB, retired Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Diversified Value and Lifestyle Group, at Synchrony Financial (formerly GE Capital Retail Finance), as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Dean Mark Alexander Inducted as President of Association of American Law Schools
Mark C. Alexander, The Arthur J. Kania Dean of the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law, was inducted as President of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) after delivering his inaugural address at the AALS' Annual Meeting in San Diego in January. Dean Alexander was named President-Elect in January of 2022 after three years of service on the Executive Committee. He succeeds Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the University of California Berkeley School of Law.

Villanova University has invited 11 distinguished jurors to select the three finalists for the 2023 Opus Prize, an annual faith-based humanitarian award—whose $1 million award and two $100,000 prizes make up one of the world's largest faith-based awards for social entrepreneurship. The prestigious honor recognizes individuals who champion faith-filled change and are working to solve the world’s most persistent social issues.

Leveraging Technology to Promote Access to Social Justice has been named a finalist in Bloomberg Law’s inaugural Law School Innovation Program, which recognizes law schools that have implemented instructional programs that advance new approaches to legal technology implementation and legal education. The course, developed by Associate Professor Amy Emerson, JD, MLS, engages students in self-regulated learning to build legal tech solutions for community partners.

Biology Professors Receive $1 Million National Science Foundation Grant for Wetlands Research
Samantha Chapman, PhD, and Adam Langley, PhD, professors in the Department of Biology and two of the founding faculty of the Center of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stewardship in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, are principal investigators on a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their project, “The Interplay of Nitrogen Loading and Ecosystem Sustainability in Threatened Wetlands.”
