Villanova University has named William Thomas Newsome, III, PhD, the Harman Family Professor of Neurobiology and Founding Director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute at Stanford University, as the 52nd recipient of the Mendel Medal. Dr. Newsome will deliver the Mendel Medal lecture titled, “Decision-making, Brain and Free Will,” on Friday, November 18 in the Villanova Room of the University’s Connelly Center.
Villanova University will celebrate its 48th annual Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW) from Sunday, November 13, through Saturday, November 19. HHAW originated at Villanova University in 1975 under the guidance of the late Father Ray Jackson, OSA, an Augustinian priest whose legacy also includes co-founding the University’s Center for Peace and Justice Education. In the years since, this week of coordinated activities and education has expanded beyond Villanova to more than 700 campuses and communities and, has become the most widely organized hunger and homelessness event of its type nationwide.
Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing Associate Professor Sunny Hallowell, PhD, APRN, PPCNP-BC, a pediatric nurse practitioner and an expert in breastfeeding and neonatal ICU nursing, has developed a Neonatal Intensive Care Virtual Gaming Simulation, the first of several such games she hopes to develop as a 2021 Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation Scholar. Dr. Hallowell, whose work was funded by a Fitzpatrick College of Nursing Research Development Grant and The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, focuses on simulating a clinical experience using a health equity framework that promotes undergraduate students’ application of knowledge, clinical reasoning and communication skills.
Villanova University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, announced a transformational $7.5 million gift from an anonymous donor to establish the William and Julia Moulden Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This gift will allow the College to invest in key programmatic and student-focused initiatives, while honoring the late William and Julia Moulden, a Black, Catholic couple who provided crucial support to the Augustinian founders of Villanova College in the 19th century. Adele Lindenmeyr, PhD (pictured here) will serve as the inaugural William and Julia Moulden Dean.
Villanova professors of Electrical and Computer Engineering, James Peyton Jones, PhD and Pritpal Singh, PhD, have been selected to receive U.S. Fulbright Scholar grants by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The two professors have dedicated their careers to humanitarian engineering and will expand their efforts during the 2022-2023 academic year as Fulbright Scholars.
