Wireless Locks in Stanford Hall

UNIT's Wildcard Services deployed wireless access readers to the dorm rooms in 4 halls on South Campus (Katherine, Caughlin, McGuire and St. Monica). This initiative adds security and convenience; students can open their dorm room with their Wildcard or an app (CBORD Mobile ID) on a smartphone. The system also integrates with the Housing Management System to seamlessly update access modifications.  The new system was rolled out to 302 locations and replaces the punch code and key-based locks. This Wildcard Access enables Villanova to:

  • Control and update locks remotely
  • Open doors with a card or app (CBORD Mobile ID)
  • Eliminate metal master keys by temporarily elevating Wildcard privileges
  • Enact quick emergency lockdowns on one or more doors
  • Audit door histories and alarm states

Password Expiration & Complexity

As part of an ongoing IT Security initiative, UNIT is moving all users to a complex password format by the end July 2015. Older password formats are potential security risks and need to be updated to the new standard. All new passwords created and issued by Villanova will have the following guidelines:

  • At least 1 upper and lower case letter
  • At least 1 number
  • At least 1 special character e.g. %, $, ( < > & ' "
  • Must have at least 5 unique characters
  • At least 8 characters in length

If the account password expires, you may still use the following instructions to reset your password to the new format or contact the Helpdesk (ex. 97777) for assistance.

Patch Management

As part of the ongoing IT Security and Information Protection Strategy, UNIT is deploying an automated patch management system to ensure client desktops and laptops are kept up to date with current security patches. Without an automated system in place, the number of vulnerabilities over an extended period of time can seriously compromise the integrity and security of information.

We will be deploying Microsoft's SCCM for automated patch management of Windows –based workstations and servers. This will provide greater insight into the historical and current state of our systems, and allow us to quickly understand the impact of potential vulnerabilities.
