Welcome to the UNIT Updates webpage where UNIT will display monthly updates on services and solutions, projects, new UNIT initiatives and relevant UNIT information for the Villanova Community. Please let us know if you have any comments or ideas for future issues.
UNIT has made available a series of IT security awareness videos on the Blackboard portal, in an effort to build awareness of online risks and educate our community on preventive measures and provide the tools and additional awareness needed to protect yourself and our community in the IT world. These videos are brief and easily digestible, and cover topics including: creation of a strong password, avoiding phishing scams, protecting your email and IM, safe social networking practices, and protecting your computer.
UNIT continuously looks for new and innovative approaches to ensure University network security, and safeguard Villanova’s computer network from the wide variety of threats and vulnerabilities. Over the summer, UNIT’s Network and Communications Services team replaced Villanova’s “traditional” Internet firewall with a “Next-Generation” firewall. Next- Generation firewalls address limitations in traditional firewalls that render organizations susceptible to increasingly more sophisticated and aggressive network-based attacks.
The University’s new Internet firewall will enhance network quality of service (QoS) for students, faculty, and staff by better management of network bandwidth for University mission-critical applications, restricting access to or blocking non-productive and suspicious applications, and more sophisticated detection and remediation of destructive malware.
