Classroom Lecture Capture

Not sure if your classroom is capable of automated lecture capture? Locate this sign inside your classroom and confirm that it has a Mediasite sticker; classrooms without a Mediasite sticker are only capable of Zoom recording. Please contact cit@villanova.edu if you are unsure, or if your classroom does not have any signage.

If your class is taking place in a lecture capture-capable classroom, you have the option to request that it be recorded automatically via Mediasite, based on the class schedule in Banner. These recordings consist of the room’s video, audio, and computer output displayed on the projector.

Classroom recordings, by default, are available privately on MyMediasite to the lead professor listed for the course in Banner and are NOT automatically released to students. Faculty control their class recordings and choose whether to share them with their students.

Automated recordings consist of the room’s video, audio, and computer output displayed on the projector.

Faculty can share individual lecture recordings with a single student or the entire class on a case-by-case basis. Alternatively, faculty can post a single link to the full collection of their course recordings to their LMS course page page for students to access throughout the semester.

For detailed instructions on how to do this, please review our Mediasite Help Documentation or contact your College's Instructional Designer.

The ability to revisit content has shown to be valuable to the learning process (see “References” below). Recorded classroom lectures were overwhelmingly highlighted by students as an invaluable learning tool in survey responses collected over the 2020-2021 academic year.

These recordings are particularly useful to students for:

  • Reviewing materials
  • Revisiting complex topics or getting clarity on points students may have misunderstood
  • Allowing students to focus on engaging in discussions during class rather than taking notes
  • Adding to or taking notes on the lecture
  • Preparing for exams
  • Improving the overall learning experience

These recordings can be highly beneficial to students with learning support needs, students who miss lectures unexpectedly due to illness, nonnative English speakers, and those who otherwise need to review the materials.

Whether or not you plan to share your lecture recordings, if your class is being recorded, it is strongly recommended that you notify your students via your course syllabus that the class is being recorded.

Villanova’s Institute for Teaching and Learning (VITAL) encourages faculty to refer to the suggested language located at the following link when writing their syllabi: Classroom Lecture Capture (CLC) Syllabus Statement

Additionally, all classrooms equipped with lecture capture technology will have the following sign posted:
