Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to audition?

Most music groups are not auditioned.   You may join the Band, Orchestra, or Drum Line; Men's Choir (Singers) or Women's Choir (Voices); and Dance Ensemble, Irish Dance Team, Ballet, Twirlers, or Tap without an audition.   Sign up for a group here:  Sign Up!

Sometimes within groups there will be auditions for solos or smaller ensembles within a group.

Groups that do audition students are:

  • Choral:  All A Cappella Groups; Chamber Ensemble
  • Dance Groups:  Dance Company, Ablaze, Nova Nassa, Superlative, Wazobia
  • Band Auxiliary:  Dance Team, Kickline
  • Instrumental:  Jazz Band
  • Theatre:  Our Theatre Group (VST) and Musical Theatre Group (VSMT) audition for roles before each show is cast.   All are welcome to join the clubs and have a hand in choosing shows, producing, directing, and doing tech just by being a non-auditioned member.

All groups that hold auditions will have them at the start of the academic year.  Some will hold auditions at the start of the Spring Semester if there are openings for new members.

Is there a music major or minor?

Villanova does not have a music major or minor.  General topics in the arts are taught across the University (mostly in Honors, A&S, and in the Theatre Department).  Music Activities Groups are open for all students.  (Instrumental Groups and Large Vocal Ensembles don't even require an audition!)

Does the Office of Music Activities offer coursework?

No.  We are a non-academic Performing Arts program, and as such, we do not have a means of offering courses for credit.  We offer club based performing arts opportunities in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre for non-majors, and Dance, for students from all academic areas throughout the University.   Some Academic Departments do offer courses in the Arts from time-to-time.   Check the Academic Offerings under Arts & Sciences (particularly the Department of Theatre and the Honors Program).

Is Band Camp or Performing Arts Camp mandatory in order to be a member of any of our Groups?

No, but we strongly recommend that you attend for a concentrated immersion experience at the start of each school year - before academic pursuits necessarily take precedence.
