How it Works

As a chapter accreditation tool, the Standards of Excellence Program addresses and outlines specific tasks to be completed by chapters each academic year. The program serves as a guide to outline and differentiate between minimum expectations for recognition and operation, and items that demonstrate a chapter performing at an outstanding level. Chapters will be supported by the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff, governing councils, Order of Omega, and advisors in completing and documenting these tasks. Expectations have been determined based on current community and chapter/council practices, and are organized into the following "Categories for Excellence."

Chapter Leadership & Governance Financial Responsibility Social Responsibility & Risk Management Scholarship
Service & Philanthropy Chapter Advisors & Alumni Relations New Member Recruitment & Education Member Development

At the end of each academic year, chapters will be required to submit a comprehensive Final Report outlining achievement in the above categories, as well as present a Final Project to the Standards of Excellence Review Team. After report submission and project presentations, chapters will be evaluated and given one of the following four ratings: Accredited with Excellence, Accredited, Unaccredited, or Unacceptable.

Extensive guiding rubrics are provided in the "Resources" tab to the right. Rubrics cover each Category for Excellence and accreditation rating. The rubrics are not meant as exhaustive "checklists," but should be used for examples and items to consider when preparing Final Reports and Final Projects. Chapters are still responsible for and highly encouraged to use organizational mission and values, priorities, and requirements in crafting their Standards of Excellence submissions.

For the 2017 - 2018 academic year, the Final Report will be due by Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. The following criteria should be noted:

  • Reports should not exceed 50 pages total. The recommended length is 25 - 30 pages.
  • Appendices should be limited and used only if absolutely necessary/as supporting documentation.
  • Reports are to be submitted as one document in PDF format titled, "Organization Name_2017-2018 Standards of Excellence Final Report" and emailed to your chapter's FSL Advisor.
  • Chapters are encouraged to highlight their year in the report; not to summarize everything that occurred in the past 12 months.
  • Reports should showcase action and results - reports should not focus on future plans.

For the 2017 - 2018 academic year, Final Project presentations will take place from Monday, April 16 to Friday, April 20, 2018. Outlines and supporting materials for all Final Projects must be submitted to your chapter's FSL Advisor at least 24 hours prior to your chapter's scheduled presentation time.

  • Projects can be as creative as you want them to be - there is no set format/expectation for how projects will be presented.
  • Project presentations should be no longer than 40 minutes. Remaining time will be used for the Standards of Excellence Review Team to ask questions (up to 60 minutes total).
  • There is no limit on the number of members present for presentations - please note the entire chapter is not required to attend the presentation.
  • The project presentation is open to alumni and advisors for observation.
  • Chapters are responsible for setting up any technology needed at least five minutes before the presentation start time.
