It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Reverend Richard G. Cannuli, OSA, MFA, '73 CLAS, Professor Studio Art, Director/Curator of the University's Art Gallery and Collection. Father Richard passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 after a brief battle with cancer.
Father Richard is probably best known for this remarkable artistic abilities and talent. He spent much of his prolific life enriching and enhancing the world for others through his artistry, designs and lectures. His icons have been commissioned by both parish communities and private individuals. One of these, Do Not Weep for me Mother, was presented to His Beatitude Patriarch Nasrallah Peter Sfeir, on behalf of Villanova University. Another was accepted into the permanent collection of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine at Sinai, Egypt, and a third was presented to Pope Francis, at the opening Mass of the Augustinian General Chapter of 2013 in Saint Augustine Church in Rome, Italy. Some of his most recent works include the design of windows for Corr Chapel and the vestments worn at our Liturgical celebrations.
Father Richard's rich legacy lives on in his art, which graces the walls of our campus, as well as those of churches and parishes around the world. His contributions during his life were numerous, and we give thanks for his significant impact on the Villanova community, particularly as a Professor and Curator of the Art Gallery and Collection. Please keep Father Richard and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
