Program Basics

This program is open to Villanova University freshman who will be enrolled in the Villanova School of Business and who have a special interest in Asian economies. This sixteen week overseas study experience combines academic coursework with a practical internship located in Singapore.

Singapore is a city, as well as a country, and is home to over 4.5 million people from diverse ethnic backgrounds such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian. Singapore is one of the world's most prosperous nations and acts as a strategic trading hub in the global economy. The country has invested heavily in education and the standard of living is amongst the highest in Asia. The tropical climate provides a green and lush backdrop for Singapore's modern architecture and efficient transportation system. Singapore has four official languages (Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil) with English as the language of business, making Singapore an exciting starting point for any Villanova student's global business career.

Student Experience

"Working in Singapore has been such a great and rewarding experience.  The second half of the Global Citizens Program is an 8 week internship in an industry of your choice.  Our group is fairly spread out between accounting, finance, marketing and other firms that are both big and small.  While most of the group has had jobs before, an internship feels like an entirely new thing.  It is so exciting to go to work every morning and feel like an employee who is actually making a difference for the company.  This aspect of our time in Singapore has definitely made us all feel more independent and grown up, especially when people think we are so much older than we actually are! The international connections we are all making and the experience we are gaining in a real business setting is so valuable.  Working in Singapore is definitely an adjustment because the environment here is so competitive, but it only teaches us more and more every day!" - Emily Richey

Academic Coursework

In addition to the internship, there will be four course components, developed in collaboration with Villanova University and taught by local faculty. These four courses are designed to fulfill freshman year VSB requirements and to ensure that all GCP participants will remain on schedule to graduate in four years:

  2. Financial Accounting - VSB 2004 / Strategic Information Technology - VSB 2006  (Final Offering is TBD)
  3. Business and Society – SCSC 1975 (Social Natural Science Requirement)
  4. Intro to Macroeconomics – ECO 1002

Professional practice internship

Villanova University will partner with AIC, a non-profit provider of academic internship services in Singapore.  In addition to academic coursework, students will participate in a professional practice internship, completing over 200 hours of work experience.

Villanova University students will have access to professional practice internship opportunities spanning a wide variety of industry sectors in Singapore. The internship services include:

  • Instructions on preparation of a placement essay and a resume appropriate to Singapore
  • Individual interview with an internship director on the Villanova University campus approximately two months prior to the program start date
  • Group orientation on the Villanova University campus and on-site in London
  • Placement of student in a professional practice internship
  • Follow-up and any required trouble-shooting
  • Coordination with each internship supervisor and obtaining the supervisor’s and the student’s written evaluations

Internship placements are based on the skills, interests and professional goals of the student and the project needs and work cycles of the internship sponsors. Students are placed in internships that directly reflect or relate to their courses of study to ensure quality and academic relevance of the placement.

Students will be provided with 18 weeks of centrally located, fully furnished student housing in Singapore. Housing will be convenient to public transportation and will include kitchen facilities, access to laundry, and internet connectivity.

On-campus Orientation

Once the participating students have arrived on Villanova’s campus in the fall, a member of the Office of Education Abroad's staff will lead a series of orientation sessions on various topics that will prepare the Global Citizens for their semester abroad and internship placement.

Student Experience

"The first eight weeks of the program were spent in the classroom, earning a semester’s worth of credits in half the time!  Classes are challenging, as we went to school for seven and a half hours a day, with half days on Mondays and Fridays.  It’s been really interesting getting the different perspectives on education from our Singaporean teachers and learning about the different education systems in this region of the world.   The pace of the courses is very quick and the teachers expect a lot of the whole class, making the learning experience an intensive one.   Singapore is an exciting learning and work culture to be a part of, and I’ve definitely met lots of intelligent, hard-working individuals!" - Allison Meade
