Next Steps in the Discussion Regarding the Department of Public Safety

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Last month, four community forums were held to explore whether Villanova's Department of Public Safety should transition to a full service law enforcement agency that is sworn and/or armed. The forums were just the first step in a thoughtful, thorough deliberation of this issue and were intended to provide information to students, faculty and staff while fostering discussion. The conversations and questions that arose then and since have made it clear there is a wide range of opinions surrounding the topic.

I need to further explore the issues and hear the various voices of the campus community before beginning a dialogue on this matter with the Board of Trustees. Therefore, I have formed a President's Task Force that will be chaired by Barbara Wall, PhD, vice president for Mission and Ministry, and comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators. In addition, the Office of Planning and Institutional Research will be distributing an electronic survey to all members of the Villanova community after Thanksgiving. The results will be shared with the Task Force and will provide valuable context as they work to formulate a recommendation on this important issue. I hope the Task Force will complete its work by end of the spring semester so that I may present my recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
