VILLANOVA, Pa.—Villanova University’s Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Institute was honored by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers for “Exceptional Activities in Entrepreneurship Across Disciplines.” This award honors an institute or center dedicated to creating, advancing and enabling entrepreneurship education opportunities to multiple audiences across campus.

“The ICE Institute at Villanova builds opportunities for cross-disciplinary interactions to occur because we believe that students and faculty from the liberal arts and sciences, engineering, business, nursing and law can learn from one another and become well-rounded, innovative and creative thinkers,” said II Luscri, Executive Director of the ICE Institute and Assistant Vice Provost for Centers and Institutes at Villanova University. “Today’s business climate demands innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, and our students are highly sought after by companies and organizations as they are the creative problem solvers our world needs.”

An interdisciplinary institute at Villanova, ICE supports traditional student-entrepreneurship and startups, but its broader mission is to nurture students in the key areas of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship so they stand out in the marketplace as creative and innovative thinkers. The Institute offers academic-based programs, sponsors entrepreneurship competitions and immersion programs, and advises the University’s colleges, schools and faculty on how to further enhance programs and curricula on areas related to creativity and entrepreneurship. In addition, an Entrepreneurship In-Residence Program gives students access to expert hours and mentoring with experienced entrepreneurs.

“ICE programs, ranging from one-hour innovation challenges to week long immersion programs, provide opportunities for students to develop the tools and perspective needed to advance creative solutions and take action on their ideas,” said Martae Giometti, Assistant Director of the ICE Institute.”

Below are examples of ICE Institute programs and offerings:

Idea Accelerator

In 2015, the ICE Institute opened an Idea Accelerator facility located in Falvey Memorial Library—the University’s academic hub in the center of campus. The Idea Accelerator was created with idea generation in mind. The space was designed—from the walls and chairs to the tools and technology—to promote the sharing of ideas within the Villanova community and a multidisciplinary approach to generating and advancing new ideas. The Idea Accelerator consists of programming space that can host speakers and workshops related to innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship and a Maker Lab to encourage prototyping and testing of new ideas.

ICE Challenge

The ICE Challenge is an annual requirement for all first-year students in the College of Engineering, Villanova School of Business and College of Nursing. Faculty in each college are trained by ICE to deliver the module in required core classes so that each student is exposed to entrepreneurship in their first eight weeks as a Villanova student. Students present ideas, form teams and pitch in front of their class—deciding amongst themselves who will represent their class section in front of a panel of judges during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

ICE Certificate Program for Sophomores (ICE CaPS)

The ICE Certificate Program for Sophomores (ICE CaPS) is an annual, cohort based program specifically designed for sophomore students across all undergraduate majors. Throughout the course of the program, students participate in a series of eight workshops with topics ranging from improvisation to design thinking to social entrepreneurship. Participants are also required to attend an ICE related program within the greater Philadelphia community and complete a final project related to our physical space on campus, the Idea Accelerator.

Immersion Experiences

ICE sponsors several immersion experiences that are designed to expose students to innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial ecosystems in key locations. These programs include Villanova in the Valley, a six-day program in Silicon Valley; Villanova on Set, a six-day program around the film/tv/entertainment industry in Southern California; Villanova on the Hill, a five-day program around policymaking in Washington, DC;  and, day treks to startups and leading technology companies in Philadelphia and New York. Through these initiatives, students hear first-hand from investors, entrepreneurs, startups, large companies and innovators to learn about innovation and entrepreneurship.
