Villanova University’s Department of Education and Counseling  Honors Local Teachers with “Teacher of Courage and Conscience” Award

Villanova, Pa. –  On Tuesday, May 3, during Teacher Appreciation Week, the Department of Education and Counseling in Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognized three outstanding local teachers with its inaugural 2016 “Teacher of Courage and Conscience” Award.  The recipients were Danielle Arnold-Schwartz of Welsh Valley Middle School; Kelley Collings of Feltonville Schools of Arts & Sciences; and Carl Rosin of Radnor High School. 

The award was created to honor teachers who improve access to high-quality education for those students who are currently least well-served; advocate for the education profession; encourage student curiosity and love of learning; use innovative teaching strategies, engage students in meaningful problem-solving, knowledge-production or artistic work; and embody and put into practice Villanova University’s values of Veritas, Unitas, Caritas (truth, community, love).

The honorees were recognized at the Department of Education and Counseling’s 58th Annual Cooperating Personnel Dinner.  During the dinner, the award recipients, along with administrators from their school or district, were treated to special video presentations, in which their students and colleagues spoke to the lasting difference each has made. 

“Their courage and their commitment to addressing the needs of students who are least well-served in our education system and to upholding public education as a public good are qualities we in Villanova University’s Department of Education and Counseling do not take for granted,” said Jerusha Connor, PhD, associate professor, Education and Counseling.  “We commend them because by what they do for their students and for the profession, they inspire us too.”

About the awardees: 

Danielle Arnold-Schwartz, Welsh Valley Middle School. Ms. Arnold-Schwartz is committed to helping students to become advocates for social justice through Points of View, a curriculum she developed. She regularly blogs, leads parent groups, and coordinates activism efforts in the Philadelphia suburbs related to educational equity.

Kelley Collings, Feltonville School of Arts & Sciences. Ms. Collings champions a high-quality education for all students in her roles as a founding member and co-chair of the Caucus of Working Educators of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, as a leader in the Teacher Action Group of Philadelphia, and through her work with Teachers of Philly and Need in Deed.

Carl Rosin, Radnor High School. Mr. Rosin coaches the Ethics Bowl, sponsors the GSA Gay-Straight Alliance and serves on the Honor Council. Mr. Rosin’s exemplary teaching has been previously recognized by the 2012 Delaware County Excellence in Teaching Award and the national Knisely Award as High School Philosophy Teacher of the Year in 2014.
