In case of inclement weather, the Charles Widger School of Law Commencement ceremony will be moved indoors to the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse is located at the corner of Ithan and Lancaster Avenues. Students and guests should park at the Law School parking garage. Continuous shuttle service will take guests to the Church and Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.

Student Assembly/Line-up/Processional

  • Student Entrance: Students should enter the complex using the entrance off Ithan Avenue, directly across from the Villanova School of Business. This entrance is marked “Villanova Athletics.”
  • Students should assemble in the Talley atrium and hallway area upon immediately entering the building.
  • Law School staff will assist graduates in the line-up. Do not skip seats.
  • Students should arrive wearing robes and caps. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR NAMECARD.
  • There will be a room for students’ coats, umbrella, bags – but this will not be secured so please do not leave valuables.
  • Students will begin line-up at 10:15 am.
  • Students will form two lines. Line up in any order you wish, keeping in mind that graduates on the right side of the line will be seated on the right side of the Fieldhouse and graduates on the left will sit on the left side. Therefore, the classmate you wish to sit next to should be either in front or in back of you
  • The processional will begin at 10:30 am. Students will follow Dean Barton into Jake Nevin and continue until staff floor marshals direct you to your seats. Please do not skip seats.

Calling of the Names

  • Graduates will be called forward to receive your degree one row at a time. As your row is called forward, follow the directions of the Marshal to approach the stage. Dean Henfey will guide each row of students as you approach the stage.
  • PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR NAMECARD and keep your card with you as you go up the stairs on to the stage. Once on stage, you will give your namecard directly to the faculty reader and then continue across the stage to shake hands with the Dean and receive your degree. You will then continue back to your seat as the remaining graduates’ names are called.


  • Graduates will recess from Jake Nevin behind Dean Barton, following the faculty and stage party into the Talley atrium.

Shuttles will be available to transport graduates and guest back to the Law School for the reception. Graduates must return their caps and gowns by 1:30 pm in Room 201.


Graduation announcements, thank you notes, and other commemorative items are available via Villanova University Graphic Services. You can choose customizable printed announcements which include personalized pictures and text. Announcements can be shipped to your home, office, or picked up at the print center.

Dean Mark Alexander and members of the Law School community will honor graduating students who have attained Latin Honors (Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude), will be inducted into the Order of the Coif or will receive selected commencement awards. This event takes place on Thursday May 17, 2018 at noon in the Arthur M. Goldberg Commons. By invitation only.

Graduates should pick-up their commencement regalia with the Career Strategy office during the designated appointment times. Graduates are encouraged to wear their regalia to the Commencement Mass and for the Commencement Ceremony.  Tassels are worn on the right side of the cap, then switched to the left side after the degree is conferred.

Graduates must return caps and gowns following the ceremony to the robe return area (Room 201 at the Law School) before 1:30 p.m.

Please note that traffic conditions around campus may be congested on Commencement Day. Graduates and guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Parking Passes are NOT necessary for the Law School's Commencement ceremony. After 2 pm, parking passes are required for all vehicles on campus.

Law School graduates and guest should park in the S-4 parking garage next to the Law School. Shuttle buses will run continuous loops to the campus locations for the Mass and Ceremony or guests may walk to various event locations.

Mass: Guests with Special Needs should enter campus via the Spring Mill Road/Route 320 Entrance where public safety officers will direct your vehicle to the closest available parking.

Ceremony: Guests with Special Needs should use the entrance from Lancaster Avenue/Route 30 between the Villanova Stadium and Galberry Hall for ADA parking and drop-off closest to the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse. Villanova public safety officers will direct your vehicle to the closest available parking.

2018 Commencement Map


There are NO tickets needed for the Law School's ceremony and no limit to the number of guests each law graduate may invite.

Seating is open and on a first-come first-served basis. 

All seating is accessible. Guests with special need or wheelchairs should seek out an usher for assistance as necessary.

Diplomas may be picked up following the ceremony at the cap and gown return at the Law School (Room 201). Graduates who do not attend the ceremony will have their diplomas mailed to the local address on file.

The system will provide guests with text messages regarding parking and traffic, as well as notification should any Commencement events be moved or canceled due to weather or an unexpected circumstance.
